Wakey!Wakey!

Wakey!Wakey!, aka one of my favorite acts out of NYC, was recently behind the keyboard again.  Mike Grubbs decided to record yet another of his live sets and make it available for free as a downloadable album.  This time he was playing at The Bowery Ballroom and he came away with nine songs including a cover of Crazy by Gnarls Barkley, a Wakey!Wakey! standard Falling Apart, and a few tracks I had not heard yet.  If you’d like to grab the entire album you can get it for free here.

mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Brooklyn
mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - LGA

Here are two of the new tracks that I enjoy the most.  The entire album is worth adding to your collection and free music is always fun to get.  Also, by clicking the link above {to download the album} I wanted to point out that there is the option of downloading individual tracks, as well as the entire album, from that site.

Interviewed by Record of the Day

A couple of weeks ago I was emailed an interview by Record of the Day. I’m fairly confident in assuming that most of you don’t read their e-mag, so I’ve included the questions and answers here for your reading pleasure.

+++++

Where are you based? - Currently I blog out of northern Indiana in the States although for about a year I was maintaining the blog from China.

What made you start an mp3 blog? - I’ve always been passionate about music and this passion has always led me to share my favorite bands with my friends. Starting an mp3 blog allowed me to share this passion with more people at a time.

Who are your favourite three artists? - Right now my favourite three artists would have to be Cloud Cult, The Weakerthans, and The National.

Please pick just one artist as a tip to break through in 2008 - If there’s one artist that could potentially break during the next nine months I would go with Wakey!Wakey!

Is there a band or track that you were first to feature in the blogosphere that you are particularly proud of? - I’m particularly fond of Zach Williams who is currently based out of New York City. As far as I know I’m the only blogger to ever write about him.

What’s your day job? - Currently I work as a substitute teacher.

What would be your dream job in music? - My dream job in the music industry would be to work for a magazine such as Paste {or for a music promotions gig such as Chop Shop}.

Do you make any money from the blog or do you have any plans to try and make money? - Although I do have advertisements on my blog they only generate income when someone actually purchases a product through those links. As of right now I don’t even make enough money to pay my web hosting bills each month.

Do you still go to record stores and buy vinyl/CDs? - I enjoy record stores that have vinyl due to the nostalgia factor but I can’t justify spending money on a CD that I will immediately rip onto my computer and then store away in the corner with all the other unused CDs.

Do you post classic tracks or just new music? - I try to maintain at least some classic tracks on The World Forgot. Basically I blog about whatever I find to be particularly appealing to me at the moment I sit down to write regardless as to when the track was recorded.

Do you post links to iTunes, Amazon or any other store? - I have links to buy music from iTunes, Amazon, and CDBaby on every single post I put on the web as long as that particular artist is available from those retailers.

Do you only post music that has been sent to you by the band or their representative? - No, although when I can I work as closely as possible with an artist or their representative to get permission. I do however only post music that I think will interest people in new musicians.

If you received a leaked album by your favourite band way ahead of release date, would you post it? - I would never knowingly post a leaked album before it’s release date. Sometimes I receive an album ahead of the actual release for promotion and review purposes and in that case I post a track or two.

Do you ever post music you don’t like? - I try not to. I attempt to only post about music that I actually enjoy.

Have you been threatened with legal action at any point? Or asked to remove tracks by artists or their representatives? Do you comply? - Only once have I ever been asked to remove a track by a label representing an artist. I complied as soon as I possibly could after reading their email.

Anything to add about your policy for posting music? - I only post music so that new fans can be made for the artist I’m talking about.

What are your favourite mp3 blogs? - You Ain’t No Picasso, Cable & Tweed, Who Killed the Mixtape, and Good Weather for Airstrikes are currently on my short list for favorite blog.

Do you read traditional music magazines and papers? Which ones? - I read Paste every month and occasionally Spin and Rolling Stone.

How much influence do you think you have? Is your influence growing? Any examples of artists you feel you’ve really helped break? - I have a bunch of emails and a massive list of comments that declare I’ve helped open the ears of some of my readers. I like to think I have an influence on those who read my blog, but I’m not sure if I’m as persuasive as the artists songs can be. I’m confident that the longer I maintain my blog, I’m almost to two full years now, my influence will continue to grow.

BOTM vol 05

Happy Leap Day to the world. I hope you’re enjoying this arbitrary addition to the calendar. I also hope that you’ll enjoy this collection of songs and gems I’ve found during the past month or so. Some of them percolated down to me through the blogowebs {way cooler sounding than blogosphere - or should we use interblogs?}, some came to me through email, and some I found on albums that have been sitting in my giant pile of discs to listen to {and don’t even get me started on the thirty or so albums sitting as almost forgotten mp3’s - this is hard work}. Anyway, if you missed my post yesterday about Cloud Cult go read it now, their new album will change the way you think about music and what constitutes good music. Cheerio, and on with the show!

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

mp3 : Benjamin Gibbard - Indian Summer
I honestly don’t know how it took me this long to discover and/or listen to this song. It hails from the soundtrack to the Kurt Cobain movie which Ben Gibbard lent his considerable talent toward creating the orchestration for.

mp3 : The Dodos - Fools
This is the song that got me hooked on what might be my favorite new artist of the year. And by new artist I don’t necessarily mean new to the world, but new to me. I love their music, their simplicity, and the way this dynamic duo creates so much out of so little.

mp3 : John Doe - Golden State
This is the type of song that Bruce Springsteen should be making whole albums out of. It’s a great duet with great lyrics. The melody is slow and moody enough to leave your heart stricken without actually causing you to disintegrate into the pathos of melancholy.

mp3 : Jon Sebastian - I Get Wet (Andrew W.K. Cover)
This is hands down the best cover {other than Wakey!Wakey!} since Ted Leo covered and mashed together Since U Been Gone with Maps. Jon captures all of the intensity of the original while changing it enough to make it something new, something to party with, something to get wet about.

mp3 : Jose Gonzalez - Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division Cover)
I love it when songs are remade with a flair for the brooding emotionally wrought state of life {see Gary Jules classic remake of Mad World as a reference}, and this cover by Jose Gonzalez {with whom I already have a long love affair} is a great example of what a cover song should be. Myspace musicians should take note.

mp3 : Lily Allen - Everybody’s Changing (Keane Cover)
I guess this month was either good for covers or there was something in the loads of snow that dumped on my abode this past few weeks that just put me in the mood. Luckily Lily Allen, although not quite a class act, does indeed make excellent musical choices. And this is one of her better efforts {although I do appreciate in her studio work how much she disses other Brit MC’s}.

mp3 : Plastic Operator - Peppermint
Yes, this is Plastic Operator, aka the Postal Service of France. And by that I mean their tracks, all of them, could easily fit onto the forthcoming album by the dynamic pair of Gibbard and Tamborello. {although I would probably substitute the crystal clear vocals of Ben in that case}. Regardless of vocal preferences Plastic Operator is solid, and shall remain.

mp3 : Talbot Tagora - Connection (Elastica Cover)
I have literally no idea where I found this cover song, but I can tell you why it made the BOTM series. Just listen to it, the entire track, don’t let the initial twenty five seconds fool you. This is not a minimalist Burialesque style of cover song. This is the real deal.

mp3 : The Black Hollies - Paisley Pattern Ground
Everything about this song reminds me of The White Stripes. Or maybe Jack and Meg smashed up with everything I loved about the early work of the Beatles or the Kinks {who are still, easily, one of the most underrated bands of all time}. It’s just a classic sound on this track, one that must be heard.

mp3 : The Hysterics - Untitled
Yet another song that reminds me of the Beatles. I’m sensing a trend this month. There’s a lot of cover songs and a lot of music that in some way reminds me of the great sixties {some would say the greatest decade ever - not me though}. I guess I feel that this track sounds like what the Beatles would’ve been as a pure indie band {or maybe the Monkey’s on a rare day}.

mp3 : Two Hours Traffic - Stuck for the Summer
It’s almost guaranteed that if you can play a decent guitar melody {no matter how repetitive} over a driving drum line with a pleasant voice and decent lyrics you’ve already won my heart. This song reminds me a lot of California style rock ala early Rooney or Phantom Planet. Loved it five years ago and still love it now {especially the ending}.

mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Cokehead
It is official, Mike Grubbs can do no wrong. Ever. He’s the OJ of the indie music scene {not to confuse him with some who may or may not have killed someone at some point}. What I mean is that by this point I’m so caught up in the Wakey!Wakey! effect {phenomenon} that I’d be willing to forgive him almost anything {except for stealing someone’s honey like you would a bike}. His vocals are excellent.

mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Fallin’ Apart (Live)
I first heard this song about nine months ago on a mixtape and it was essentially got me interested in Wakey!Wakey! Well, it was sent to me yet again and I must say that it still serves to impress upon me the depth and talent that Mike possesses. Here’s to hoping he has a long and successful career because I’d love to hear some more of his particular brand of genius.

If you like the music here, and want to share it, please do not post links to download the files directly. Instead direct your readers, friends, lovers, etc., to this blog post. Thanks. To see all other Best of the Month compilations just click the link below titled twf.

Wakey!Wakey!

We all have our own personal version of every song. Whether it’s because you don’t really know the lyrics or the fact that you love to belt out alternate harmonies in your car, there is something inside of each of us that makes each song we hear unique to us. Maybe you play drums on your steering wheel, identify with certain idiosyncrasies or turns of a phrase, or maybe you just close your eyes and let the music overwhelm your senses. Whether or not you admit it, we all somehow make music our own.

Luckily for the entire world Mike Grubbs isn’t afraid to take a song, make it his own slice of heaven, and release it to the masses for free. For the past few months Grubbs, aka Wakey!Wakey!, has been putting out an incredible array of cover songs under the album name Wakey!Wakey! Wednesdays. Ranging from The Decemberists to Alicia Keys, from Cyndi Lauper to the Beach Boys, no stone has been left unturned in this exploration of just what a cover song can really be. And what he has come home with is ten songs that the test of time will prove stand proudly next to their original recordings, and in some cases eclipse them altogether. Now that the compilation is complete, with his brilliant rendition of Everlong by the Foo Fighters, I can safely say that this is the best cover album I have ever heard.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Apology Song (The Decemberists Cover)
mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Two Headed Boy Part 1 (Neutral Milk Hotel Cover)
mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Say It Ain’t So (Weezer Cover)
mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Maps (Yeah Yeah Yeahs Cover)
mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - California Girls (Beach Boys Cover)
mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - New Partner (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billie Cover)
mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Live Cyndi Lauper Cover)
mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - No One (Alicia Keys Cover)
mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Letters Home (Joie DBG Cover)
mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Everlong (Foo Fighters Cover)

The tracks here are posted in the order that they appeared over at Wakey!Wakey!’s myspace page. My hat is off to you Mike Grubbs, you have made a wonderful work of art for all of us to hear.

Wakey!Wakey!

To be honest, if all I could listen to this week was one album I would probably choose this series of covers put out by Wakey!Wakey! For the past few months my email has been graced with brilliant cover songs and the only thing about these tracks that makes me sad is that each week brings this series closer to the end. This week the ninth cover was released and it is a cover of a song that I have never heard before. The track is originally by Joie, also known as Dead Blonde Girlfriend, who apparently plays a fervent live show with an acoustic guitar. Once again Mike Grubbs imprints another solid song with his now trademark style and sound and creates something haunting, aching, and full of emotion. There’s just something about his voice, and the way that each line of these covers seems to speak directly to the heart of life, that I cannot get enough of.

mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Letters Home (Joie DBG Cover)

Once again, this is the ninth song in a ten song series called Wakey!Wakey! Wednesdays. If you would like to hear the rest of this brilliant series just click the link below labeled twf. I’m waiting with bated breath for the conclusion of this great cover album.

Wakey!Wakey!

Mike Grubbs has undertaken a lot of styles, bands, genres, and challenges in his release of ten cover songs over the span of what has pushed over three months now. He started it as a way to promote the release of his first album {which was recorded live and is for sale over at his website} but I feel as if now he’s continuing the series as a way to give us all the gift of his incredible talent. Wakey!Wakey! posseses this intangible quality to take any song, as popular or obscure as it could be, and make it something undeniably original. And this weeks release is no different. This time around he chose to cover Alicia Keys’ song For No One and Mike did it in a way that might have suceeded in putting more emotion into an already wonderful song.

mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - No One (Alicia Keys Cover)

I am seriously loving this series of cover songs and I hope you’re as enthralled as I am. If you’d like to listen to all previous tracks in this series just click the ‘twf’ link at the bottom of the post. His past efforts have included Neutral Milk Hotel, The Decemberists, Weezer, and Cyndi Lauper just to name a few.

Wakey!Wakey!

Not enough good things can be said about Wakey!Wakey!  This recent series of covers have been mind boggling amazing.  The more I listen to these reworkings, of mostly well known songs, the more Wakey!Wakey! begins to steal the song for his own.  His voice on these recordings reminds me a lot of Ben Gibbard.  Now hear me out before you dismiss this upon first listen.  I draw the parallel in that they both seem to have an amazing purity to their style of singing.  Granted, I wouldn’t say Mike Grubbs and Ben Gibbard are imitations of each other, but there is a certain earnestness in both their voices that makes me just want to be a part of their songs.

Here’s the latest two songs Wakey!Wakey! has ereleased in preparation for his new album {which just dropped this week and is available on his myspace}.  Enjoy these tunes, the cover of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy is astounding.

mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - New Partner (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy Cover)
mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Girls Just  Wanna Have Fun (Live Cyndi Lauper Cover)

Enjoy the entire cover album by Wakey!Wakey!  Past covers have included The Beach Boys, Neutral Milk Hotel, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Weezer.  As with all my posts if you’d like to see anything else I’ve posted about the artist, especially more music, simply click the “twf” link here at the bottom of the post.

Wakey!Wakey!

One more post before I get on the road. I don’t have a lot of time today to upload the next big band from {insert your neck of the woods here}. Instead I’m giving you the latest in a string of covers put out by New York’s brilliant Wakey!Wakey! Although this cover of a Beach Boys classic isn’t my favorite of the covers he’s done, I still think it’s quality. And really, if it’s on a blog you might as well download it and check it out.

mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - California Girls (Beach Boys Cover)

Personally I would’ve liked to hear Mike Grubbs tackle Sloop John B or some other song from Pet Sounds, but I guess my wishes, as those of my mother, will go largely unfulfilled this year. Ha. Enjoy this cover and if you like it check out more from Wakey!Wakey! here on TWF.

Wakey!Wakey!

Have you ever wondered what The Demberists would sound like if they were covered by Ben Folds, or what Karen O’s voice would sound like if it was drained of her odd gusto and draped instead over a beautiful piano arrangement? Or perhaps you thought to yourself, late one night after the children had gone to sleep, “I wonder what Neutral Milk Hotel would sound like if their song Two Headed Boy was a piano anthem?” I don’t know if these are questions you’ve asked yourself recently, but I know they’ve been floating around my subconscious for quite some time now.

Luckily for me, and you, I finally went through a bunch of my inbox. There is a lot of good music in there. A lot. And hopefully I’ll be able to give some of that goodness away for Christmas presents both here as mp3s and in a more physical, mailed to you, gift. Only time will tell.

As for today my mind’s wanderings are answered all in one spot with Wakey!Wakey! Wednesday. This is a series of cover songs released by Wakey!Wakey! in preparation for the launch of the his first album entitled Silent as a Movie. A couple of days ago I included his cover of a Weezer classic and today I catch you up with the other three tracks he’s now posted and given away via email. Enjoy.

mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Apology Song (The Decemberists Cover)
mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Maps (Yeah Yeah Yeahs Cover)
mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Two Headed Boy Part 1 (Neutral Milk Hotel Cover)

But really, doesn’t Apology Song have a certain Ben Folds quality to it?  Maybe if you added some crowd noise?  {And yes, I do mean ‘Ben Folds quality’ as a good thing}

Wakey!Wakey!

If you haven’t heard the sound of Wakey!Wakey! yet I suggest you get out of the cave you live in and read a few blogs now and then. I even dropped some WW knowledge awhile back when I posted the Cross Pollination Mixtape.

For those of you dear readers who are knew to the Wakey!Wakey! scene the band is made up of Mr. Mike Grubbs and his catchy sound is quickly gaining the devout ears of many music snobs. There seems to be an innate kinsmanship between boys who play the keys and it would be easy to list Grubbs alongside fellow troubadours Ben Folds and Jon McLaughlin. Although to leave off with this description of him at that point would lead many to believe that he sounds just like those two musicians. Which he doesn’t. He definitely has his own unique style; his own panache if you will. It’s hard to accurately describe the style of music that Grubbs plays without using words like authentic, passionate, and genuine. There’s a certain quality to his songs that transcends mere music and lyrics and makes listening to him sing more of a holistic experience.

Now if I could only get him to play shows with another of New Yorks burgeoning male vocalist scene, Zach Williams, I think between the two of them they could sell out shows from Xi’an to Lhasa. Or at least all across the Western World. So here’s the official call out to both of you. Wakey!Wakey! and Zach Williams would make an excellent live show or split EP. Contact me and I’ll get you in touch {just as long as I get mentioned in the liner notes of course. haha.}

mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Get Away (Here We Go Again)
mp3 : Wakey!Wakey! - Say It Ain’t So (Weezer Cover)

This is hands down the best cover of any Weezer song I have ever heard. Trust me, your day is not complete if you haven’t heard this song. If you like what you hear make sure to catch Wakey!Wakey! live at the Rockwood Music Hall in NYC this upcoming December 5th. For free at 8pm.
