Gossip Girl vol 07

Not quite the best picture of Ms. Van der Woodsen. And honestly not quite the best name either. The show made a point, as the books do, to make all the characters come from money with family names that sound like they would have inherited money. And although the show has a lot to do with teenage romance and love triangles, the issues of money, drug abuse, trust funds, social class stratification, and sex run rampant throughout the mix. And speaking of mixes, this is the only the second or third time I’ve had anything good to say about the music used on the television show Gossip Girl.

What started out as a promising show with a good soundtrack has quickly spiraled into a show where all they seem to do is play the top ten hip hop trash songs they could afford along with a few poorly written and even more poorly preformed dance pop songs. Well on this installation of Gossip Girl, which aired last Wednesday in the U.S., the music was considerably above par from previous efforts. At one point, a particularly touching love scene where Dan was contemplating losing his virginity, he actually had Elliot Smith’s album New Moon on a record player in his room. If he wasn’t your favorite character before that point in the show, then he certainly is now.

I hope you enjoy these mixes in which I post the music used on each weeks episode. Keep watching Gossip Girl, keep reading The World Forgot, and keep listening to good music.

mp3 : Air - Photgraph
mp3 : Elliott Smith - Whatever (Folk Song In C)
mp3 : John Ralston - Second Hand Lovers
mp3 : Sum 41 - With Me
mp3 : Valeria (featuring Aria) - Girl I Told Ya

Most definitely listen to the tracks by Air and Elliott Smith. In fact go out and buy everything Elliott Smith ever recorded and get some education. The track by John Ralston is solid as well while the Sum 41 track showcases their softer side, think their All America Rejects or more melodic Blink 182 side, and the Valeria track is actually much better than a little sarcastic comment could make it out to be. I was actually writing a comment on how to avoid the Valeria track when I realized that it’s actually well done dance pop. So there you have it, I’m endorsing this entire mix. Get them all.

Also appearing in this, the seventh episode of Gossip Girl, were songs by Soho Dolls, Classic, Warren, Miss Eighty 6, and David McConnel. All of whom I couldn’t really find anything worth sharing. I’m starting to suspect that The CW owns the rights to an entire album by Miss Eighty 6 as her songs have been appearing on every episode of Gossip Girl.
