The National new track Terrible Love

Last night one of my favorite bands, The National, used Late Night With Jimmy Fallon (another favorite of mine) to debut a new song from their upcoming album.  As is par for the course when performing live on a late night talk show the sound quality isn’t exactly brilliant, but the song has a certain shine anyway.  Have a listen.

mp3 : The National - Terrible Love (Live)

Terrible Love will appear on the upcoming album High Violet which is due out on May 11.  If the rest of the tracks are as solid as Terrible Love we’re all in for a treat.

Radiohead track Fog

I was listening through my TWF archives the other day (I’ve posted about 1000 tracks now) and one song kept playing through my head and I realized that I simply didn’t have a copy on any of my drives.  Thankfully the internet still exists and I was able to find another version of this track which has become one of my all time favorite songs by one of my all time favorite bands.

mp3 : Radiohead - Fog (Again) (Live)

In my original post, way back in April of 2006, I had this to say.

“Radiohead never fails to impress. And this track is no different. Included below is one of their finest live reworkings of a song. The song, Fog, first appeared on the album Knives Out after being launched as “Alligators in New York Sewers” in Caesaria on July 9th, 2000.

From that first play, where Thom Yorke introduced it as “kind of a silly song,” it has matured and grown into something at once melancholic and beautiful.”

The Mountain Goats - This Year

My relationship with The Mountain Goats is in direct parallel to the type of images I upload onto my blog here.  You see my procedure for processing these images which accompany every post seems to go in streaks.  For a month or so at a time I’ll run the same set of tweaking the levels, increasing contrast, and essentially over saturating the colors.  Then I’ll look at a new picture and realize I hate that process and instead I switch to desaturating and washing out all the colors for the following month or so before I completely reverse my position and go back to my old method.  And that’s how I feel about The Mountain Goats.  For awhile they’re great, then I hate them, then I love them again.

Recently I’ve been in love with one song of theirs in particular.  This Year is the perfect anthem for, well, this year which we are all currently toiling through.  With the repeated line “I am gonna make it / through this year / if it kills me” it just seems to fit this melancholic mood the world has settled into.

mp3 : The Mountain Goats - This Year
mp3 : The Mountain Goats - This Year (Live)

For those that care about the integrity of full albums, the intent of the artist to create a moving piece of art that drifts from track to track, or whatever other excuse you use when your friends urge you to only play the best singles on an album {a request I’m sure you vehemently deny} the original track appears on the album The Sunset Tree (amazon) (itunes).  We will make it through this year; even if it kills us.

Weezer covers MGMT and Lady Gaga

The other day my brother passed along a link to a youtube video in which Weezer plays a live cover song of both Kids by MGMT and Pokerface by Lady Gaga.  I’m not entirely sure how the two songs fit together {both ideologically and musically}, but in some way Weezer makes it work.  And through some clever use of the internet {thanks google} I ripped the video, extracted the audio, and now you’re presented with a delicious mp3 for your consumption.

mp3 : Weezer - Kids and Pokerface (MGMT and Lady Gaga Cover)

Enjoy the track and have a good week.

Friendly Fires live at Radio Radio

Yes, I am just that fortunate.  A few weeks ago, when I was down in Indy to catch a brilliant set played by White Lies, I also was able to enjoy a set by indie dance rock darlings Friendly Fires.  And let me say this; if all you’ve ever done is hear the studio album by these three gents then you have yet to scratch the surface of Friendly Fires’ entertainment value.  Seriously, these kids know how to have a good time in a live venue.  Their energy was contagious.

mp3 : Friendly Fires - Paris
mp3 : Friendly Fires - Skeleton Boy

Both of these songs were played that night in Indy and both of them hail from the album Friendly Fires (amazon) (itunes).  It’s a very fun little dance rock album and it translates, in case you haven’t picked up on this yet, extremely well to a live setting.  If you will you can think of them as a less edgy version of !!! (but just as fun live).

White Lies live at Radio Radio

A little over a week ago I had the good fortune of catching the international tour of a great band out of the UK.  White Lies played a strong set at a gem of a venue in Indy called Radio Radio.  The tickets were cheap, the booze was way overpriced, and the music was pretty much amazing.  White Lies was the second band to take the stage and to sum up their performance in as glib a way as possible I would say that they sound like the Killers mashed up with Muse with The Strokes sprinkled over top of a couple of tracks.

mp3 : White Lies - From The Stars
mp3 : White Lies - The Price of Love

Both of these tracks hail from their debut album, To Lose My Life (amazon) (itunes), and I think my reference to the Killers is fairly obvious on both of these tracks {and I guess by saying the Killers I really mean New Order}.  Long story short the performance was brilliant, and the songwriting and craftsmanship apparent on this album is something to be heard by all.

Noisettes Drop a Cover of a Killers Classic

It’s not often that a song makes it directly from my email inbox onto a post in one day, but occasionally a song drifts along and forces me to pass it on.  This morning I got a cover of the Killers track When You Were Young as it is reinterpreted by the Noisettes in an in studio live performance across the pond in the UK.  I edited the track a bit so all you get is the music {not the intro and outro} and I put it into stereo as I always think it sounds a bit better than when tracks are presented in mono.  Enjoy the music, enjoy your weekend.

mp3 : Noisettes - When You Were Young (Killers Cover in the Live Lounge)

While I’m not a huge fan of changing the lyrics to make a cover I’m choosing to overlook that small detail in favor of the original quality of this track.  The bridge is delightful.  Wait for it.

Arcade Fire - Wake Up

For some reason track seven from Arcade Fire’s first album, 2004’s Funeral (amazon) (itunes), has been stuck in my head for almost a month now.  From the repeated and chanted chorus of “ohhh” to the story Win Butler weaves throughout the song I just can’t seem to get it out of my thoughts.  So I thought I’d troll the interwebs and find a few various versions of this track to cheer everyone up in what has become a bit of a rough stretch for the world.

mp3 : Arcade Fire - Wake Up
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Wake Up (Live)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Wake Up (Live Acoustic Sessions Version)
mp3 : Arcade Fire & David Bowie - Wake Up (Live at Fashion Rocks)

Although I really love the album version of Wake Up there’s something about the live energy of the song that really catches my attention.  I love how crowds hold onto the “ohhh” and give the track a bit of extra raw power.  And let us all be honest for a brief moment, the live version that they played with The David Bowie is absolutely priceless.  I mean that guy was in Labyrinth.

Deer Tick live at The Brass Rail

And I’m back. This past week, on a delightful Wednesday evening, a coworker and I ventured up north to the far reaches of Fort Wayne to catch a bit of music. Fortunately for me my friend is an avid listener of internet radio and he had stumbled upon this random show featuring Deer Tick at a small little venue named The Brass Rail. In the past few years The Brass Rail has undergone a bit of a management change and while they’re maintaining all their cred as a local watering hole during the early evening they’re looking to up the ante at night and become a premier rock back serving the greater Fort Wayne area.

On this night the cover was three dollars, the beers were a dollar and a half each, and the music was more than worth the long trek back and forth on the frozen evening. Deer Tick lived up to their billing as they played through a set of a southern infused rock with a cover of Bruce Springsteen, another of Sean Kingston, and quite possibly the best live version of La Bamba I have ever heard mixed in just for fun. And the fact that they mananged to cram all of this fun onto a tiny little stage in the corner of The Brass Rail just added to the night.

mp3 : Deer Tick - Ashamed
mp3 : Deer Tick - These Old Shoes

These two songs were both quite brilliant in a live setting, easily surpassing these studio recordings which appear on 2007’s War Elephant (amazon) (itunes). Might I add that the cover shot for this album is quite possibly the best cover shot I’ve ever seen for an album. The playful nature of Deer Tick that presents itself very well in a live setting and I strongly encourage anyone with a chance to catch them live to get out and see a set. It’ll be a fun evening.

Zach Williams, Josh Moore, Anthony Raneri, Dustin Kensrue, Aaron Gillespie, and Jon Foreman cover The Beatles

A few months back a musician I admire and utmost respect for contacted me to say that he was going to be playing a show hosted by the group To Write Love On Her Arms.  I didn’t really think much of it at the time, largely due to the fact that I wasn’t able to phsyically attend the show, but I was very excited to hear that my friend Zach Williams was finally getting a little recognition.

For those of you who have missed out I honestly think Zach Williams has a brilliant career ahead of him as a singer and songwriter.  His stories are intimate and classic and his style feels effortless.  Undoubtably he puts a lot of thought, life, sweat, and tears into each of his creations and at the end of the day his art is better for it.  There have recently been rumours that Zach is possibly working on releasing a proper album and I must add that that upcoming day cannot come soon enough.  For now, I presume, we will try and remain content with what little offerings we can find.

mp3 : Zach Williams, Josh Moore, Anthony Raneri, Dustin Kensrue, Aaron Gillespie, Jon Foreman - With A Little Help From My Friends (Beatles Cover)

If you’ve listened to anything by Zach before you’ll easily be able to hear his voice on this track.  I’m glad he was able to play with a great group or artists and I’m proud that they, in turn, played with him.

BOTM vol 12

Welcome back to The World Forgot.  Welcome back to the Best of the Month series.  Welcome many readers to election day and welcome the rest of you to a wonderful November 4th.  For those that are still unaware what the BOTM series is all about here’s a quick refresher.  I collect songs all month long and the best that I’ve heard in the past thirty days I put together in one easy to find post.  If you’d like to browse through the past eleven volumes click here.  Enjoy the music, and if you live in the Midwest enjoy the glorious sunshine.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

mp3 : Amie Miriello - Disarm (Smashing Pumpkins Cover)
This is easily one of my favorite Smashing Pumpkins songs and I think this cover respects the original material while at the same time Amie isn’t afraid to put her own spin on this classic.  It actually sounds a bit like if Stevie Nicks covered the Pumpkins.

mp3 : Arcade Fire - Brazil (Bossonova Cover)
The music in this cover is every bit as cheeky as you’d expect but for some reason Win Butler’s voice adds just the right amount of gravitas to make this cover worth a second, third, or tenth listen.

mp3 : B.o.B. - Left Field Lovely
This track reminds me of all my favorite parts of Outkast.  If that’s not brilliant enough endorsement for this track I’m willing to bet you hate everything I love.

mp3 : Ben Lee - Float On (Modest Mouse Cover)
This is a pretty raw cover of the song that put Modest Mouse on literally every iPod in the world.  Never mind that about two thirds of the way through the song Ben accidentally halts the song and has to count it off again.  It’s wonderful.

mp3 : Chark Mu - Eh Oh
Mr. Mu makes mighty impressive remixes.  Apparently when he’s not splicing together beats and melodies he’s busy making some equally impressive original material.  Clearly Chark Mu is a force to be reckoned with.

mp3 : Coldplay - Lost+ (feat Jay-Z)
After Chris Martin contributed a bit of talent to that Jay-Z track a ways back we all knew that Z would return the favor.  That’s just the type of classy gentleman he is.  The rhymes don’t kick in until after the two minute mark, but they’re worth the wait.

mp3 : Digital Leather - Dead Sound (Raveonettes Cover)
The first two thirds of this track are filled with enough glitches and blips to satisfy anyone with a heart for Fruity Loops or Acid Pro.  The real beauty reveals itself when the music is stripped away for a moment and you realize your heart is crying out for it to begin again.  Don’t worry, it does.

mp3 : Goodtimes Goodtimes - Eloise
If you’re wondering who should be crowned the next Dylan look no further than this track.  Seriously.  It is as if the vocals, the melodies, the whisper of whimsy, the overdose of melancholy, and the guitar strumming are taken right from Bob himself.

mp3 : Lily Allen - Naive (The Kooks Cover)
Lady Sov can kiss Lily’s butt.  If there was any question as to who was the better of these two oft quarrelling ladies this song puts most of that squabble to bed.  Honestly, can anyone imagine Sov pulling off anything like this?

mp3 : Of Montreal - Crazy (Gnarls Barkley Cover)
It’s live, it doesn’t have the best audio quality, but it captures the fun that is infused into every Of Montreal set.  And let’s not forget that Kevin Barnes can actually sing {even if he might be the weirdest performer currently on tour}.

mp3 : Of Montreal and MGMT - Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana Cover)
I’m not sure where this cover comes from.  It’s in a live setting, and it’s decent quality, but what I find more fascinating is that it’s Of Montreal and MGMT paying homage to Nirvana.  And they do it in an appropriate straight up rocking sort of way.  Kudos.

mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - In The Words Of The Governor
Will Suf ever release a new album?  There really hasn’t been much news surrounding the Sufjan camp these days.  It seems as if he’s busy shooting high 8 videos, writing instrumental pieces honoring highways, and signing more talent to his ever growing indie label.  This song is way different than most of what you’ve heard.  And it’s still brilliant.

mp3 : The Decemberists - Valerie Plame
I’m not sure The Decemberists will ever live up to the glorious splendor that was The Crane Wife.  Right now they’re putting out a series of EP’s and performing some songs on late night talk shows.  This happens to be one of those songs.  I like it, so just listen to it and agree with me.

That’s all for volume 12 of the BOTM series.  Come back often and read some of the regular posts where I basically tell you what’s good, what’s bad, and I succeed in convincing you that you’re not cool unless you’re just like me.  Oh, and make sure you check back tomorrow to catch the Best of the Remix series.  Cheers.

The Killers live at Glastonbury 2007 part 02

Yesterday, aka through this link, I brought you the first four tracks from The Killers Glastonbury 2007 set.  Today, as promised, I bring you the second part.  Two more days and you’ll have them all.  Until then you’ll just have to make due with the first half.  Enjoy.

mp3 : The Killers - Somebody Told Me
mp3 : The Killers - Smile Like You Mean It
mp3 : The Killers - Jenny Was A Friend of Mine
mp3 : The Killers - Uncle Johnny
mp3 : The Killers - This River Is Wild

As I said yesterday these tracks are appearing here on The World Forgot in the order that they were played in concert.  They’re bootleg live tracks, not studio recordings, so be prepared for a little crowd action, clapping, and quite possibly some singing along.  All that aside the audio quality on these tracks is tops.  See you tomorrow and the day after for the last half of the set.

The Killers live at Glastonbury 2007 part 01

Apparently there’s this little music gathering known as Glastonbury Festival which happens occasionally.  Apparently at said gathering of music fans there are some big bands who sometimes play killer sets and set off the revelers.  Apparently The Killers have played a few sets there over the years.  And also, apparently, someone thought it would be a good idea to bootleg the entire set, all nineteen tracks, and put them online.  Welcome to part one, the first four tracks.  It’s an excellent recording, I’ll try to post the entire set throughout the week.  And yes, that is a ploy to get you coming back over and over and over again.  Eat it.

mp3 : The Killers - Sam’s Town
mp3 : The Killers - Enterlude
mp3 : The Killers - When You Were Young
mp3 : The Killers - Bones

Note that all of these tracks are live recordings, not studio quality.  The tracks will be posted in order that they were played at the show {and the downloads are numbered to keep them in order}.  Also, and I guess I could use some help here, but I’m assuming that these are bootleg tracks recorded live at the concert.  I’m assuming this because I could find no mention of this being an official recording {anywhere on the web, including The Killers site}, and I can’t find this concert for purchase at any retailer.  Enjoy the tunes.

The Killers Live on SNL

The Killers must easily have one of the most hyped albums of this calendar year.  Whether you loved or hated their previous effort, Sam’s Town, you’re more than likely waiting around anxiously for their newest disc to spin {or download}.  To hold you over there have been a few live tracks flitting around the interwebs recently, which I’m sure you’ve heard, and this past weekend The Killers had the good sense to play on Saturday Night Live.  Admittedly the sound quality on these songs isn’t as brilliant as I could hope for, but that’s what happens when live television is converted to simple audio tracks.

mp3 : The Killers - Human (Live on SNL)
mp3 : The Killers - Spaceman (Live on SNL)

Both tracks are great although I still have absolutely no idea what the track Spaceman is about.  On that note I guess I don’t really have a clue what Human is about either.  Are we human, or are we dancer?  Say what?  In the end, though, it doesn’t matter because the songs just sound amazing.  Here’s to hoping the rest of the upcoming album, Day & Age due November 25th, is just as well crafted.

Arcade Fire : Live On KCRW

The kids of Arcade Fire are awesome.  They also span quite an impressive range of heights.  Sorry for cutting you off there love, that’s just the way it is.  Anyway, I get quite a few requests to repost old material every week in email format.  Some songs and artists get requested once, some two or three times, but only one post of mine consistently comes up and is requested again and again {probably once every ten days or so}.  For all the lovely readers who’ve wanted to see these tracks once again grace the interwebs, here is the moment you’ve been waiting for.

mp3 : Arcade Fire - Intro (Live on KCRW)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Wake Up (Live on KCRW)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #4 (Live on KCRW)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Vampire Forest Fire (Live on KCRW)

mp3 : Arcade Fire - Born on a Train (Live on KCRW)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - In the Backseat (Live on KCRW)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Outro (Live on KCRW)

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

For those of you who are interested this recording was made January 17th of 2005 and it is quite amazing.  It’s worth listening to it just for the alternate version of Intervention {and the rest of the tracks are equally compelling}.  *It’s also worth noting, and Win Butler says so quite clearly, that Born on a Train is a Magnetic Fields cover.  Cheers.

Much thanks goes to KCRW for consistently putting amazing music on the internet.  If you’ve never been to their website that simply must be changed.   Click on through and have a listen to the Morning Becomes Eclectic archives.  You’ll love it.
