If you don’t really recognize the name Lisa Hannigan it’s not your fault. A lot of her amazing work, and wealth of talent, has come as the backing singer to Damien Rice. Although, to be fair, I feel as if many of the songs she contributed to with Damien could easily have been listed as duets or at least joint ventures. Well regardless of their obvious musical chemistry awhile back these two parted ways and Lisa did what all singer songwriters do; she struck out on her own and set to work creating something of her own.
This track will appear on the upcoming album entitled Sea Sew (amazon) (itunes) which will be made publicly available on February 3rd. I haven’t had a chance to preview the rest of the album, but this track alone has made me excited to hear what Lisa has cooked up on her solo effort. Just listening to this song makes me want to go dig up old tracks by Broadway Hush.
Damien Rice is an amazing artist with great talent. His voice and his style stand in a class of their own. Another great thing about Damien is that he’s worked closely with Lisa Hannigan on a lot of his tracks. Putting these two artists in the same room is like putting early Simon and Garfunkel together.
I’m not sure if these tracks, like yesterday’s post about Simon and Garfunkel, actually qualify as Christmas music but seeing as how this is my blog, and I don’t really care, I can post whatever I feel like. So here’s some tracks from Mr. Rice. Enjoy the tunes.
This months BOTM volume is getting released a bit earlier than would be the normal case. I’ll be travelling this weekend and I don’t know when I’ll get a chance to post again {let alone upload loads of music}. Volume 2 is filled with all the good music I could get my hands on and I tried especially hard to find those tracks which may have slipped by you on the first go round. I understand that not everyone can check every blog every single day, I know I can’t, but hopefully through this mishmash of a collection I’ve found something everyone can enjoy.
And enjoy it you shall. This BOTM volume comes wrapped up in the tape of love. Cheers.
Every single one of these tracks is solid from start to end. I absolutely love the Beirut track and Lisa Hannigan has been on my mind ever since, well, everything she’s ever done. These, my friends, are the best of the month for a reason. They really are the best tracks that I found using the power of the interwebs and other various and sundry means of discovery. If you’re only going to download one track, out of all this goodness, I would recommend the track by Beirut. It really is brilliant.
Please watch the above video, you will not be disappointed. It’s Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan performing 9 Crimes live on The Tonight Show. If I had to use one word to describe this performance it would be ‘haunting.’
Damien Rice has always held my mind captive. It’s as if his voice demands that I listen to what he’s saying, even if it’s a song about Eskimos. There’s a certain plaintive quality to his voice, a sense of urgency that says “if you don’t listen, I just might fade away to nothing.” And so I listen, and so should you. He really is a great song writer, and apparently he has great stage presence as well.
