It’s My Birthday and I’ll Blog If I Want To

I always wanted to be Heman {or Orco, it was always a toss up}. We all want to have super powers of some sort. That’s the sole reason anyone has ever been a rock star. Ever. It’s the closest we get to real life super heroes {even Hollywood doesn’t come as close as the local bar act who gets up there every weekend and hammers through a set that they just know is the best music on the planet}. Bear with me on this post, it’s going to be a bit out there {I mean honestly, I led with Masters of the Universe}.

I really hate blogging using someone else’s computer. Or at least when that computer is a futuristic computer with a hard as beans to use keyboard. Honestly, sliming down the height of each key in no way makes it faster or easier to type. I wish they would standardize the location of all extraneous which fall outside of the standard QWERTY arrangement because no one should have to suffer the amount of backspace whiplash I’m incurring upon my right hand. But really, let me rant, it is after all my twenty sixth birthday today {TWF will be two years old in about a month}, so I think I deserve a little self indulgence this day. Especially considering that so far I haven’t seen a single real friend of mine {about eighty percent of them live hours and hours away}, I spent all day substitute teaching a kindegarten class {which I do find to be wicked amounts of fun, but not really in a birthday-centric way}, and I played around on my guitar for awhile wondering if a gift certificate I just got to a local guitar store will go towards an amp or a ukelele. But back to my main point, the standard layout of all keyboard keys. We have standards for USB 2.0, Blu-Ray, Divx, mp3, ad naseum, but we can’t all agree on where the delete button should be placed in relation to the backspace? Is there some global conspiracy of CEO’s scheming to permanently hook all of there first time customers on their specific arrangement of keys so that they’ll never move on and buy a new/better/Asian brand?

Just to let you know that’s not all that goes on in my mind. I’m seriously trying to write an epic song about the life of a snowflake {I contemplated writing an entire concept album about the life of a snowflake from snow to water to river to ocean to evaporation to snow, but I’m not Sigur Ros and I don’t have the talent to create soundscapes. Yet}. I also finished reading an excellent book, Love is a Mix Tape, which spins an interesting weave of music history, mix tape making history, love, grief, and loss. Basically it’s everything I ever wanted a two hour read to be. It has music and it has melancholy; what more could I possibly want? {Well I guess I could ask for more useless uses of the semicolon but I believe I’m covering my need for those in this post}. I agree with the statement that love is a mix tape. I think that in the end love is really the desire for someone to know you completely and still desire to sit across from you at a diner {sitting next to each other is for the bus or the front seat, nowhere else}. And a mix tape allows you to take things that you passionately love, sometimes secretly, put them together in an order that you think is perfect and shamelessly shove it into someone else’s life, hoping that they too will think that it is great. It takes a lot of daring to put together a mix tape and even more moxie to give it away {and maybe even more to hope that it makes a difference}.

So tonight I’ll probably sit at home, play some video games on Xbox Live {halo3 seems to be my drug of choice as of late - and I’m decent at it}, and watch the latest episode of One Tree Hill {only because Dawson’s Creek had the worst ending of a series ever, The OC was rightly canceled, new episodes of Gossip Girl haven’t started to air yet, and I’m hoping One Tree Hill will redeem the high school drama genre in the end}. Last weekend I threw a killer party with loads of friends, drinks, and some fire thrown in the mix. I remember staying up until four, we finished a bottle of Bushmills, and there was generally a lot of fun passed between good people {so don’t go thinking I’m doing something lame for my birthday, I already had most of my fun}.

And, yes, this still is a music blog although over the past week or so I’ve been editorializing like it’s my job. But in a sense this is my job {I currently average, after expenses, -2 dollars a month on running this little slice of heaven so I reckon I’m functioning about as well as most other business in the US}. Here’s a song that I love and I hope you love it to. It always brings back the best of all memories, however I’m currently remembering them, and I hope it hits a warm spot in your life too.

mp3 : Cheers - Opening Credits

This is the song from the television show called Cheers. If you’ve never heard of the show you better either live across the pond, be under the age of 13 {in which case it’s obvious your parents don’t care about you, I mean you are reading this blog, so go watch Cheers, it can’t hurt}, or be on your way to the closest retailer to fix this mistake in your life. I recommend season one and season two. They’re both classic. I also opted to include the actual opening credits for the show as opposed to the original song by Gary Portnoy. The full track is simply too lame and doesn’t go near as far as the theme song at conjuring up wonderful memories.

LOST, Radiohead, and Gossip Girl

Hey, no awesome music, but I thought I should post these here seeing as how not everyone I know checks iTunes or other media sites on a daily basis.

First up, LOST. This is easily one of the best television shows I have ever seen and I’ve been looking forward to season 4 since the very last second of the end of season 3 {flash forward anyone?} Anyway, right now iTunes has a free download that includes a sneak peak and the upcoming season as well as a recap of what’s happened so far.

Apple iTunes

Second on the list, Radiohead. Most, if not all, of you already have their new album, but there is a bonus Podcast available on iTunes as well. Just thought I’d pass that on. Oh, you can also buy the album from Amazon, here.

Apple iTunes

Finally television shows. I assume a lot of the people that now come and bang on my little site during the week are Gossip Girl fans. Well you can buy all those episodes on iTunes or you can stream them over at the CW website, here. Also, for those of you looking to do a little more than just recap the last three seasons of LOST in a little slice you can purchase the seasons, in full, on both Amazon and iTunes {with Amazon being the cheaper of the two choices}. LOST season 1 (iTunes), LOST season 2 (iTunes), LOST season 3 (iTunes).  Cheers.

Gossip Girl vol 11 and 12

That’s right, two volumes {aka two episodes} of Gossip Girl recap in one little post. This will get me all caught up on the drama that unfolds every Wednesday on the CW here in the states {and on various other affiliates on various days elsewhere}. This first episode aired quite awhile back and was the episode during which Christmas was celebrated, Rufus and his no-name-good-for-nothing {and not too attractive} wife hit splitsville, and Serena {with a ton of help from Vanessa} finally gave Dan her Christmas present {if that’s what the kids are calling it these days. And speaking of that particularly cheeseball love scene, does anyone know where Serena got all those projectors, where the were positioned in the room, or how she happened to cover three walls with video with nary a piece of equipment or cable in sight? On to the music.

All the files {both episodes} in one zip : here {zshare = left click}

mp3 : Band of Horses - The General Specific
mp3 : McGuire Sisters - Christmas Alphabet
mp3 : The Dan Band - Christmakwanzakah
mp3 : The Weepies - All That I Want

Obviously I’m a huge fan of Band of Horses so I figure any inclusion of their music on this show is well deserved {and no, it’s not selling out to put your tunes on television}. The rest of the tracks were holiday specific with McGuire Sisters providing a nice classic sound, The Dan Band apparently was chosen because the instrumental segment of this song was catchy {even though the entire song as a whole is kinda weak, especially the chorus}, and the Weepies track is a wonderful inclusion. I’ve long loved the Weepies and I applaud almost every song I’ve heard by them.

This is the latest episode of Gossip Girl {that being episode 12}. In this episode Rufus was turned down, again, by Lil, but this time she was running from love {to money} at the behest of her daughter whereas before it was at the prodding of her uber manipulative mother. It appears as if Dan and Serena made it through their most recent rough patch {usually dealing with the tension between the haves and the have nots} except at the end we found that Serena only escaped a real punishment, which should have been well deserved, because {as Dan predicted} someone donated enough money in her name to get her out of trouble. Does that make Serena the OJ Simpson of the show?

mp3 : LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great
mp3 : One Republic - Come Home
mp3 : Oppenheimer - Breakfast in NYC
mp3 : The Filthy Youth - Come Flash All Your Ladies
mp3 : The Filthy Youth - Orange

If you haven’t heard this track by the now infamous LCD Soundsytem you’ve either been living overseas {think remote parts of Tibet} or you haven’t been to a real party in the last nine months. It’s a great song with a slow build from start to finish, but I swear, sometimes when I listen to LCD I just can’t help saying “I liked it better the first time I heard it, when it was called Moby.” Next up is another solid track by One Republic {whom I insist must have a space between the words in their title} and although it’s not as popping as the Timbaland remix of Apologize {what could be?} it’s still a solid song. A song that reminds me a lot of Jon McLaughlin with a little slice of John Lennon’s Imagine piano line thrown in. Next in the mix is Oppenheimer, a little duo out of Nothern Ireland that I’m currently fascinated with. I feel like this song is The Flaming Lips filtered through the best Swedish pop you’ve ever heard. It’s all warm and fuzzy and local. Last in the mix is The Filthy Youth, a band who creates dirty punk infused post modern rock akin to Kaiser Chiefs or a slightly less swagger filled Strokes. Orange is clearly the better of the two tracks.

Gossip Girl vol 10

I’m a bit behind on the Gossip Girl series here on TWF, but I’m catching up. Although yesterday’s episode was the twelfth {that word is honestly spelled weird} this is only volume ten in the series. So as a little refresher the tenth episode was the one containing the debutante ball and all the other things that only the uber rich do. I could rehash the predictability of the episode or I could just point you at one of my favorite websites of all time. That would be Television Without Pity {or as they refer to themselves TWoP} and their snarky little writeup of this episode. You can find that here, but I must warn you the recap provided is scathing, witty, hilarious, and about fifteen pages long.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

mp3 : Mel Torme - Comin’ Home Baby
mp3 : One Republic - Apologize (Timbaland Remix)
mp3 : Rooney - What For
mp3 : Sea Wolf - You’re A Wolf
mp3 : The Pierces - Secret
mp3 : The Pierces - Three Wishes

The Mel Torme track is timeless and should be appreciated by everyone from your Grandmother to your hip hoping friends. The second track in this mix is one that I am frustrated about. It’s a great track, a solid song, but I cannot for the life of me understand why every blog from A to Z is labelling this a Timbaland track. Let the record state that this is a Timbaland edit, mix, remix, etc., but the song is and has always been by One Republic {and to be honest he didn’t change much, although he did make it better}. The Rooney track is fairly vanilla, aka the new less good sound of Rooney, and I feel as if they’re making the cut for these episodes simply because Alex Patsavas has a soft spot for the band {they also played an in show concert on The OC, whose music was also helmed by Patsavas}. The Sea Wolf is a brilliant choice and they recently appeared as number ten on my best albums of 2007. Toward the end avoid the song Secret by The Pierces at all costs. This is yet another musical choice for the show that I was tempted to simply ignore and refuse to blog about, but I figured someone out there would ask about it in the end. The entire track is terrible from beginning to end. It is relentless. Far better is the second track by The Pierces although it too has its moments of ear terror.

Gossip Girl vol 09

I’m sorry for the long delay in this series. I was a bit caught up in the holidays, the end of the year, all of the lists I feel obligated to make, etc. But this series is back and better than ever. It seems as if the more I poke fun at the music used on Gossip Girl the better the selections have become on future episodes. So I hesitate to say anything good, at all, about the soundtrack until they incorporate some little known acts from New York into the lineup. I’m pushing for Zach Williams or Wakey!Wakey! Think about it. Wouldn’t it be great if the little Manhattanites went to a cool indie show at Rockwood or Southpaw? I think that would make an excellent date for Dan and Serena or Jenny and Nate {oh, I said it!}.

These songs appeared in the episode where it was revealed that Blair struggles from bulimia and has received counseling for this before. I’m sure Tom Cruise would’ve hated this episode, but who cares.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {link removed by request}

mp3 : Nelly Furtado - Promiscuous (feat Timbaland)
mp3 : Ok Go - Here It Goes Again
mp3 : Bonobo - Recurring
mp3 : Sebastian Tellier - La Ritournelle {link removed by request}
- buy it on iTunes and help out the indie label that promotes Mr. Tellier
- or get it direct from the label, Lucky Number Music
mp3 : Vanessa Carlton - Nolita Fairytale
mp3 : Will Dailey - Grand Opening

Enjoy the songs my friends. The ambient/insturmental track by Bonobo sounds achingly familiar but I cannot seem to place where I’ve heard this sound before. I’m thinking maybe, wait, I got it. It sounds just like Imogen Heap without vocals. Trust me, that’s what it is. The OK Go track is awesome, but who hasn’t heard it a thousand times by now? Also, the Sebastian Tellier track could easily have passed for an instrumental remix of a melodic Radiohead song. They clearly sound similar. The Nelly Furtado track is only popping because of Timbaland and the Vanessa Carlton track could be avoided. And in the end the Will Dailey track is solid but largely forgettable.

Gossip Girl vol 08

Another week and another glimpse into the troubled lives of Manhattanites. Those lonely children with trust funds and broken homes. Now typically I insert a snarky comment about how bad the music on this past weeks episode was, but I can’t this week. To be honest I think that Patsavas is reading my blog. Now there’s no IP address, email, link, or anything else that could qualify as evidence to this fact other than, I repeat other than, the fact that the musical selection has taken a considerable turn for the better lately.

Looking back on my posts about Gossip Girl reminds me that all the bad things I’ve said about the music really doesn’t hold up under close scrutiny. On every episode there’s been at least one great track. The only problem is the fact that they fill the rest of the show with such garbage it’s hard to remember anything other than the badly written, badly sung, but perfectly produced hip hop songs that come a dime a dozen this year.

Continuing the upward trend of putting better music over most of the episodes, as of late, this week was no different. During the episode the entire EP by The Virgins was played with each track getting prominent airtime. If you were watching the show and kept thinking “wow, these songs are really good. Who is this?” Then the answer is most likely The Virgins. Enjoy the show {and the music}.

mp3 : The Virgins - Fernando Pando
mp3 : The Virgins - One Week of Danger
mp3 : The Virgins - Rich Girls
mp3 : The Virgins - Love Is Colder Than Death
mp3 : Eskimo Joe - How Does It Feel
mp3 : Dawn Landes - The Kissing Song
mp3 : Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird {oh hell yes}

The Lynyrd Skynyrd track came up on the show as they were playing Guitar Hero II at a party. Although the song was heavily edited for the show it deserves its full 9:19 album length. Listen to Free Bird and realize what a guitar can do. The Dawn Landes and Eskimo Joe tracks are also quality. And if i didn’t sell you on The Virgins earlier then consider this my official endorsement of the above tracks. Give these all a listen.

Other tracks this week included music by The Shapes, Two Hours Traffic, Pinback, and Miss Eighty 6.

Gossip Girl vol 07

Not quite the best picture of Ms. Van der Woodsen. And honestly not quite the best name either. The show made a point, as the books do, to make all the characters come from money with family names that sound like they would have inherited money. And although the show has a lot to do with teenage romance and love triangles, the issues of money, drug abuse, trust funds, social class stratification, and sex run rampant throughout the mix. And speaking of mixes, this is the only the second or third time I’ve had anything good to say about the music used on the television show Gossip Girl.

What started out as a promising show with a good soundtrack has quickly spiraled into a show where all they seem to do is play the top ten hip hop trash songs they could afford along with a few poorly written and even more poorly preformed dance pop songs. Well on this installation of Gossip Girl, which aired last Wednesday in the U.S., the music was considerably above par from previous efforts. At one point, a particularly touching love scene where Dan was contemplating losing his virginity, he actually had Elliot Smith’s album New Moon on a record player in his room. If he wasn’t your favorite character before that point in the show, then he certainly is now.

I hope you enjoy these mixes in which I post the music used on each weeks episode. Keep watching Gossip Girl, keep reading The World Forgot, and keep listening to good music.

mp3 : Air - Photgraph
mp3 : Elliott Smith - Whatever (Folk Song In C)
mp3 : John Ralston - Second Hand Lovers
mp3 : Sum 41 - With Me
mp3 : Valeria (featuring Aria) - Girl I Told Ya

Most definitely listen to the tracks by Air and Elliott Smith. In fact go out and buy everything Elliott Smith ever recorded and get some education. The track by John Ralston is solid as well while the Sum 41 track showcases their softer side, think their All America Rejects or more melodic Blink 182 side, and the Valeria track is actually much better than a little sarcastic comment could make it out to be. I was actually writing a comment on how to avoid the Valeria track when I realized that it’s actually well done dance pop. So there you have it, I’m endorsing this entire mix. Get them all.

Also appearing in this, the seventh episode of Gossip Girl, were songs by Soho Dolls, Classic, Warren, Miss Eighty 6, and David McConnel. All of whom I couldn’t really find anything worth sharing. I’m starting to suspect that The CW owns the rights to an entire album by Miss Eighty 6 as her songs have been appearing on every episode of Gossip Girl.

Let me take a minute and introduce you to a new addition to The World Forgot. His name is Josh and he will be contributing occasionally by posting odds and ends. If you look below this post you’ll see his review of the OK Go concert which he attended this past weekend. I thoroughly encourage you to check it out. He’s a good kid and he’s pretty much awesome. Now, on with the show.

This week we were put back into the melodrama that is the Upper East Side’s prep school for life. Well as long as your life consists of trust funds, Ivy League schools, and love triangles. Fortunately the music included in this episode was the best of the series. Well maybe the second best seeing as how the premier used over twenty two tracks. Enjoy the tunes, especially these songs by Beck, Mika, and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

mp3 : Beck - Timebomb
mp3 : Mika - Happy Ending
mp3 : The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Kiss Kiss
mp3 : Nekta - Guess Who

Other music in the sixth episode included tracks by 5 Alarm, Sofi J, Becca Styles, and Miss Eighty 6. And again I reiterate that the tracks up above by Beck, Mika, and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are all solid.

Gossip Girl vol 05

Alright, so I have about three minutes to post this music before I burn the house down with whatever has just begun to smoke in the oven. It’s probably apple pies. Some quick thoughts. The new EP by The Fray isn’t really new at all. It’s just a new release of an EP they put together back in 1993 or so. Don’t be fooled by clever marketing. Also, Oreos are amazing but the resealable package does nothing for me. It’s not even close to an airtight seal and, thusly, my Oreos get stale. At least I’ll always have Ziploc bags that fit around a bag of Oreos.

Speaking of the Fray, these guys are really good. I love their music. And I wish I could say the same about this music used in Gossip Girl. The OC, Scrubs, even Lost have all used killer soundtracks much to their advantage during episodes. I feel like Gossip Girl is reaching for something which always feels trite, contrived, and simply bad. Yes, bad, that’s what I think. Many of the artists featured on their weekly episodes are simply bad. Luckily on this week they had the brilliant idea to include Ozzy Osbourne, who I believe they were making fun of, and The Little Ones who actually turned out to have a decent sound.

Enjoy the tunes, keep reading, and if you so desire keep watching Gossip Girl on The CW.

mp3 : Kat Deluna (feat Elephant Man and Ivy Queen) - Whine Up (Spanish Version)
mp3 : Ozzy Osbourne - Mama, I’m Coming Home
mp3 : Prima J - Rock Star
mp3 : The Little Ones - Pot a Brewin (Radioclit Mix)

Other music in this episode included tracks by Cadence Blaze, Two Hours Traffic, All Wrong and the Plans Change, and Zooland. Good luck finding anything by them. I tried and came up empty handed.

Gossip Girl vol 04

The Weakerthans once sang “Late afternoon another day is nearly done. A darker gray is breaking through a lighter one.” And that’s what’s happening outside of my humble abode as I sit here to put some songs on the internet for you all to enjoy. But there’s a problem, I don’t really like these songs. If the songs used on Gossip Girl were one tenth as clever and deep as anything by The Weakerthans I wouldn’t struggle with the idea of putting them on my blog. But they’re not. They’re usually fairly run-of-the-mill vanilla hip hop or bad pop music. All disclaimers aside I shall persevere.

It must be hard to be on television. Or maybe she’s crying because their show is on the CW instead of any of the big networks. Oh well, get over it. Actually, the inside scoop is that Blair became emotional when she saw the latest episode and realized that only one good music track was used throughout the entire production. And that track is Moon River by Henry Mancini. For some reason this song always makes me cry. Or at least it makes me want to cry. Ever since it was used in the widely underrated movie Elizabethtown it has always brought back to me the feelings of when I lost my father. There really isn’t another song in this episode worth having on your computer. But feel free to listen to them if you’d like.

mp3 : Eve - Tambourine
mp3 : Georgies Bizet - Carmen Suite No.2 Habanera
mp3 : Henry Mancini - Moon River
mp3 : Sean Kingston - Beautiful Girls
mp3 : X5 - The Focus

Is it just me or does this track by Eve sound like a cheap cover of a late nineties Will Smith track. I mean honestly, it just sounds tired and old. Not to jump on Mr. Smith’s case, I actually love his work, but this Eve track just doesn’t sound like Eve at all. And be careful if you choose to grab the Sean Kingston track. It just might have the catchiest line of any song you’ve heard. Honestly, you’ll find yourself humming the chorus at inappropriate times.

OMG guys, I am so sorry. I’ve been swamped this past week with some new music and I have done nothing to get any of it to your ears. Honestly I’ve been consumed with playing my new xbox 360, which I bought for the sole reason of playing Halo 3. Hopefully it won’t take of the rest of my life in the way that it’s taken over my blogging world.

Anyway, here’s some updates from the third episode of Gossip Girl. Enjoy the music. The show continues to follow the way of The OC as it winds high school drama with grown up love triangles, but I’ll confess to the fact that I still enjoy watching the drama unfold. And hooray, S and B might actually be friends now that Dan has proven he actually has some balls. Yeah, I really do watch the show.

mp3 : Will.I.Am - I Got It From My Mama
mp3 : Constance Billard Choir - Glamorous
mp3 : Feist - I Feel It All

Other songs that appeared in the episode, and which I couldn’t seem to track down, are Can’t Be Happening by The Marlows, Dusk Till Dawn by Ladyhawke, and Raise Your Hand (Lifeblood Mix) by The Lights. Sorry I couldn’t find them, maybe you’ll have better luck out there in the googleverse.

Gossip Girl vol 02

Well it’s been a couple of weeks since the pilot for Gossip Girl aired on the CW and in the intervening time I’ve watched more of Entourage season 2, listened to the newest albums from Dashboard Confessional and Foo Fighters, and wondered what movie to rent with all these free redbox codes that are google easy to find.

Anyway, the second episode of Gossip Girl contained a lot of music but not quite as much as the premiere. Considering there were over twenty songs used in that first episode I’ll admit that it will be hard to ever live up to that impressive, albeit slightly scattered, quota. In the second episode the music selection followed a similar path weaving together under appreciated indie and pop music with garbage dance hip hop. Yes, sorry, Rhianna is garbage. If they really want to include some fresh and well crafted dance hip hop style music then they should look into the likes of Girl Talk.

Here’s the tracks I could find that were included in the second episode. Enjoy them.

mp3 : Ferraby Lionheart - The Ballad of Gus and Sam
mp3 : Gia Farrell - Hit Me Up
mp3 : Gym Class Heroes - The Queen and I
mp3 : Joss Stone - Tell Me Bout It
mp3 : Rhianna - Shut Up and Drive
mp3 : Rooney - When Did Your Heart Go Missing
mp3 : The Bravery - Believe

Definitely check out the track by Ferraby Lionheart and avoid the Rhianna track like the plague. I almost didn’t post it here but included it to attempt at being a well rounded and well read blogger. Also, I would check out the Rooney track and note that the lead singer of the band is the brother of Jason Scwartzman who originally played drums for Phantom Planet before dropping the music career to become fast friends with Wes Andersen and be a giant movie star. Well at least a giant movie star to people who watch good films.

Gossip Girl vol 01

I talked this show up a bit last week after catching the series premiere. And all ridiculous high school drama aside these cats do play some good music. Or rather good music is played over their heads as they look forlornly off camera with that unfocused gaze that says more than a nine hour narration ever could. Here’s all the music that appears in last weeks episode. Hopefully in the second episode, which shows tonight on The CW, will include more pop and less hip hop. Or at least less bad hip hop. Or at least less Akon and Rihanna.

mp3 : Air - Photograph
mp3 : Akon - Don’t Matter
mp3 : Albert Hammond Jr. - Hard To Live In The City
mp3 : Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
mp3 : Angels & Airwaves - The Gift
mp3 : Cold War Kids - Hang Me Up To Dry
mp3 : Hanson - Go
mp3 : Justin Timberlake - What Goes Around Comes Around
mp3 : Peter Bjorn and John - Young Folks
mp3 : Rihanna - If It’s Lovin’ That You Want - Part 2 (Feat. Corey Gunz)
mp3 : Timbaland - The Way I Are (Feat. Keri Hilson and D.O.E.)
mp3 : Washington Social Diamond Club - Diamond Hipster Boy

I recommend the tracks by Air, Albert Hammond Jr., Amy Winehouse, and suprise, Hanson. The rest of the tracks are worth putting in the shows premier, but might not necessarily make the cut of your next iTunes mix.

Like, OMG, Gossip Girl

Ok, this might not be fair, but I do think that this is the best thing Josh Schwartz has done since season two of The OC ended. Let’s face it, the last seasonish of The OC totally sucked. So tonight, on The CW, his next series premiered. Rumour has it that at first Gossip Girl was targeted as a feature film starring Lindsey Lohan, but after that all blew over [or rehabbed over, respect], the idea was given to Josh Scwartz to develop as a television series.

For those of you who missed it here’s the basic formula of the pilot. A bunch of good looking actors and actresses try desperately to convince you they’re in high school while looking approximately twenty three. They don’t succeed at this attempt, at all, but they do suck you into another never ending storyline filled with mysterious histories, more high school drama than all the current high schoolers in Manhattan put together, and quite a bit of innuendo and outright sex. So basically think it’s The OC, set in New York, with a certain clairvoyant Gossip Girl web personality narrating it all [watch out Morgan Freeman, this kid has got talent]. As hard as that might be to stomach [almost as hard as realizing that Hype has yet to figure out what's up with my site] by the end of the pilot episode I had decided, “yeah, I’ll watch that.”

Gossip Girl
Besides, true to the early OC formula, they have a pretty killer soundtrack. It must be nice to have Alexandra Patsavas of Chop Shop Music as your musical coordinator. The only thing missing now is a segment of their official web site devoted entirely to what band and what song played in each episode. I’m sure that’ll happen soon.Anyone know what song that was played at the end? It sounded to me like a new track from Blink 182. Could it be? I know they were alleging a reunion album and tour either 2008 or 2009. But anyway, enough of that. Here’s some music to have fun with. I love their new album by the way, but I won’t spoil anything here with leaked tracks. Enjoy some older stuff they’ve done. Literally everything the Foo Fighters touch is wonderful.
