BOTM vol 10

It turns out I am not well suited for waiting patiently.  That being said I’ll get straight to the music in this volume of Best of the Month.  If you’d like to check out all the previous volumes click through this link.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

mp3 : Boy Crisis - Dressed to Digress
Love the title, love the opening couple of lines of this song, and love the dance beat that’s draped across the entire song.  Yeah it’s a bit retro eighties, but what isn’t these days?

mp3 : Death Cab for Cutie - A Movie Script Ending (Acoustic)
This is a great version of this song.  It might even be better than the original album version.  Seriously, this is a wonderful track to have stumbled upon this month.

mp3 : Gabriella Cilmi - Cry Me A River (Justin Timberlake Cover)
Almost sounds like Mary J. Blige doing a cover of J.Tim.  This track is a solid cover and well worth a download.  It’s always nice to hear popular artists covered by other talented individuals.

mp3 : Kate Nash - I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You (Black Kids Cover)
This is easily one of the best cover songs I’ve heard in awhile.  It’s fun, it’s not too serious, and who doesn’t love to hear Kate’s British pronunciation of “dance”?

mp3 : Kerli - Walking On Air
I blame this song on the copious amounts of television I consume.  If you think it sounds familiar that’s because this track has been used prominently to promote the upcoming premiere of the show Fringe on Fox.  The chorus is incredibly catchy.

mp3 : Mates of State - California (Phantom Planet Cover)
I’ve been in love with all things Mates of State for awhile now {their latest album is brilliant}.  I found this older track the other day and it’s a wonderful cover.  It’s just the right amount of melancholy added to the once bright pop song.

mp3 : Megafaun - Lazy Suicide
At times I have a single track by an artist that doesn’t necessarily warrant a full post, but nonetheless is an incredible song.  This is one of those tracks.  It reminds me a lot everything I loved about O Brother Where Art Thou?

mp3 : Queen - One Vision
Not the best Queen song ever made, but who could resist putting it in Best of the Month.  I miss the days when Queen and other classic rock gods were all me and my friends listened to.

mp3 : The Chemists - Toxic (Britney Spears Cover)
For some reason I can’t resist listening to almost anything that involves Ms. Spears.  The chorus in this cover is what made it worth the listen {and the post here on BOTM}.
last.fm amazonmp3

mp3 : The Kooks - All That She Wants (Ace of Base Cover)
I’m not sure what it is with me and my love for covers this month.  Regardless for the subliminal reasons I’ve been addicted to cover tracks this is another solid effort.

mp3 : This Is Ivy League - You and Me and The Moon (Magnetic Fields Cover)
Why not include another cover song?  Really, why not?  This track stays in line with the rest of this list in that it’s mellow, relaxed, and makes for some easy listening.  Enjoy at your leisure.

mp3 : Thom Yorke - After The Gold Rush (Live)
This track hails from the brilliant appearance Thom made at the Bridge School benefit concert in 2002.  I have the entire recording and it’s amazing {I might be persuaded to post it here}.

mp3 : Your Vegas - In My Head
This is pop music as it was meant to be made.  Forget what you hear on the top forty, on the crappy local radio station you love, or even from your dorm room neighbors.  This is what pop music should aspire to be.  Solid verses, catchy chorus, hooks you’ll be humming for days.

BOTR vol 08

Well another month has come and gone.  Another thirty or so odd days and another slew of blog posts, emails, and other various forms of communication have brought to my attention enough new tracks to compile a new volume of Best of the Remix.  For those of you who are new here let me explain a bit.  Each month I compile two separate lists here on The World Forgot.  One list contains the thirteen best remixes I’ve heard in the previous month {BOTR}.  The other list which usually appears around this time of the month is a mix of the best tracks I’ve heard which aren’t classified as remixes {BOTM}.  Today I bring to you volume 8 of the series.  Enjoy the music.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

mp3 : Black Kids - I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boy Friend How To Dance With You (The Twelves Remix)
Easily one of the best remixes I’ve heard yet this year.  The original track is already outstanding, but this remix takes the song to new heights.  Such great heights even.  Simple brilliance.

mp3 : Britney Spears - Gimme More (Gordon Gonzola Remix)
If more of Brit’s original tracks were this beefed up I’m sure her career wouldn’t be so much in the crapper as of late.  This remix pops and adds just the right amount of edge to little Ms. Spears.

mp3 : Digitalism - Pogo (CSS Remix)
This remix goes in a different direction from the first two tracks.  Where they were bass heavy this remix is loopy, psychedelic, and pop infused.  It’s a different tack on the standard remix and I like it.

mp3 : Katy Perry - I Kissed a Girl (Mr Gaspar Remix)
Does anyone remember the sensationalism that surrounded the old group tATu?  I doubt it.  Do you think anyone will remember Katy Perry after the bounce/scandal apparent in this song wears off?  I doubt it.  At least we have the remix.

mp3 : KylieMinogue - Wow (CSS Remix)
Kylie was awesome when she was playing the part of a {hot} scientist in Biodome.  Since then she’s gone on to make a name for herself in the pop world.  And to be honest the remixes of her tracks have been brilliant as well.

mp3 : Metro Station - Control (Steve Aoki Remix)
This remix by Steve Aoki takes this little ditty by Metro Station and freaks it out, gives it some amphetamines, and leaves the listener slightly more ADD than they were before.

mp3 : Metro Station - Wish We Were Older (Phrenzy Remix)
This track is a bit different than the remix of Control.  It would fit more in line with Thin White Duke’s remix of The Killers and less in the ADD category of glitchy technological remixes.  Classic.

mp3 : MGMT - Electric Feel (James Rutledge Remix)
Is there any remix master out there who has yet to weigh in on this track by MGMT?  I reckon we’re approaching full saturation for Electric Feel, but month after month I stumble upon yet another great remix.

mp3 : MGMT vs Justice - Kids Are Your Friends (Japattack Pitbull Remix)
Ok, this is one remix/mashup that I’m not entirely sure about.  In fact I don’t really know what the heck is going on for most of the five minutes.  MGMT is definitely apparent {or at least their keyboard melody}, but as for the rest of it, well, it’s a remix.  And there’s some Ying Yang lyrics thrown in as well.

mp3 : MSTRKRFT - Easy Love (Hydroz Remix)
MSTRKRFT comes in a close third as the most remixed band currently on the market {only being beat out by Daft Punk and MGMT}.  This remix is a clean slice of synth and drum kit, and I like it.

mp3 : Santogold, MIA, and Gorilla Zoe - Get it Up (Radioclit Remix)
This is an excellent mashup/remix.  Excellent.  And although the entire song is well done the absolute best moment takes place over the first ten seconds as sound effects from Street Fighter {notably Ryu’s “hadou-ken” and “tatsumaki-senpuu-kyaku”} are mixed with police sirens.  Brilliant indeed {and kudos to any nerds who recognized these sound effects along with me}.

mp3 : The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby (Soulwax Remix)
My favorite Beatles song gets a little rework from Soulwax.  Granted this remix only uses the instrumental parts of Eleanor Rigby, but it’s still a great remix.  Definitely worth a listen.

mp3 : Tiga - Sunglasses At Night (Yuksek & Brodinski Remix)
Why there haven’t been more covers of this Corey Hart classic is beyond me.  Wakey!Wakey! could probably smash this hit out of the block.  Until then we’ll just have to make do with this remix of a cover.

mp3 : Snoop Dogg - Drop it Like it’s Hot (dAta Remix)
Normally I stop at thirteen tracks for the Best of the Remix series.  Today I’m feeling generous, and a little nostalgic for when Snoop was one of the kings of hip hop, so I decided to give a fourteenth track this month just to honor the D oh double g.

That is all kids.  Next month I’ll make sure to have another thirteen tracks for your listening pleasure.  Enjoy the music.  Tell your friends.

BOTR vol 05

Welcome back you little remix addicted children. For those of you who simply aren’t satisfied with the music scene of today it’s good to know you can find a little slice of heaven in sometimes mediocre tracks which have been remixed to new heights. Thusly I present to you volume five in the Best of the Remix series. If you’d like to check out all previous volumes simply click here. Enjoy the music, these are the best remixes I heard last month.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click} {link broken}

mp3 : Britney Spears vs Madonna - 4 Minutes to Break the Ice (Remix)
I think we could just say Britney vs Madonna and there would probably be a couple thousand downloads a day until I’m out of bandwidth. If I knew who was responsible for this remix I would tell you, but I don’t.

mp3 : Feist - I Feel It All (Escort Remix)
Is it just me or does Ms. Feist embody all of the feel good vibes you wish were still left in Madonna or Britney? Love this remix, it’s simple and catchy.

mp3 : Fergie - Fergalicious (MSTRKRFT Remix)
I hate Fergie. I think she’s fine as a part {a small small part} of Black Eyed Peas, but on her own she sings about working out {and spelling} far too much. Luckily MSTRKRFT can save anything.

mp3 : Fleetwood Mac - Never Forget (Cut Copy Lifelike Remix)
Cut Copy does an excellent job with this classic Fleetwood Mac track. It starts slow and builds into a dance hall worthy head bobbing beat. Kudos to Cut Copy, if only your original tunes were this inspired.

mp3 : Madonna (feat Justin Timberlake) - 4 Minutes (Jacques Lu Cont Remix)
Madonna = meh. JTim = pretty sweet. Jacques Lu Cont = brilliant. Put together = download.

mp3 : Madonna (feat Justin Timberlake) - 4 Minutes (Bob Sinclar Space Funk Remix)
Basically the opposite direction from the previous Jacques Lu Cont remix. This is space. This is funk. This is distorted bass.

mp3 : Madonna - Hung Up (Diplo Remix)
Say what you want about Madonna’s talent, aging dance moves, or questionable… everything. She knows how to make songs that can be remixed into something better.

mp3 : Madonna vs Fatboy Slim - Praise 4 Minutes (XAM Remix)
It’s nice to see Fatboy Slim still getting recognition. It’s also nice to hear the way Fatboy Slim’s sound mellows out Madonna in the best way.

mp3 : Metric - Monster Hospital (MSTRKRFT Remix)
If you’re only here to download one single track let this be it. In my opinion {which we all know matters more than yours} this is the remix to beat so far in the BOTR series.

mp3 : MGMT - Time To Pretend (Tronik Shr-Edit Remix)
This is what it would sound like if computers ruled the world, then made robots, then made those robots into a band named MGMT.

mp3 : Phoenix - If I Feel Better, I’ll Go To The Disco (Said The Buffalo Bunch)
I’m not really sure if this qualifies as a remix, so count this as your bonus track number 14 for this volume. It’s a great track.

mp3 : Sebastien Tellier - Divine (Midnight Juggernauts Remix)
Minimalist French remixes appearing in BOTR? Who knew? I think this is the first remix I’ve heard in awhile that actually slows the beat down.

mp3 : Sunny Day Sets Fire - Adrenaline (XXXCHange Remix)
After the Sebastien Tellier downer it’s nice to return to a song you can really dance to. And by dance I do mean jump around awkwardly like you’re in your own private rave.

mp3 : The Mystery Jets - Hideaway (Switch Remix)
In a remix, how do you make everything sound far away? Is it some way you mess with the channels {like centering all sounds or playing them through left/right simultaneously}? Whatever it is it sound great here.

That’s all you little addicts. See you next month with another BOTR volume.

BOTR vol 01

Welcome welcome welcome to a new series I hope to be posting at the end of each month. Some of you are already aware that I have a Best of the Month (BOTM) series that I maintain here on The World Forgot, but this is something new. I present to you Best of the Remix, or BOTR for short. I’ve noticed a wonderful trend lately that has made the remix of a popular song almost as ubiquitous as the original recording. It seems as if anyone with a laptop and a few spare hours manages to remix, reblip, or rework a song into something new. Now, granted, not all of these remixes are any good, but how are you to know the good from the bad? That’s where I come in. Presented here for your listening pleasure are the best remixes I heard during the previous month. Enjoy these tracks and come back next month for vol 02.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

mp3 : Andy Williams - It’s The Most Wonderful Time of The Year (A Shrift Remix)
mp3 : Bloc Party - Flux (GoodBooks Magnetism Mix)
mp3 : Britney Spears - Piece of Me (Bimbo Jones Club Mix)
mp3 : Daft Punk - Da Funk (Armand Van Helden’s Ten Minutes of Funk Mix)
mp3 : Daft Punk - Human After All (Peterdragontail Remix)
mp3 : The Go! Team - Grip Like a Vice (Mojib Remix)
mp3 : Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl (Think Quick 8bit Remix)
mp3 : Justice - D.A.N.C.E. (CFCF Remix)
mp3 : Kings of Convenience - I Don’t Know (Mojib Remix)
mp3 : Radiohead - Videotape (Ring Trick Mix)
mp3 : Sigur Ros - Staralfur (Mojib Break of Dawn Remix)
mp3 : The Bee Gees - Stayin Alive (Teddybears Remix)
mp3 : Thom Yorke - Analyse (Various Remix)
mp3 : Thom Yorke - The Clock (Surgeon Remix)
mp3 : TV On The Radio - Staring At The Sun (Bryan Hyde Remix)

Notable standouts in this crowded first class are the Justice, TV On The Radio, Gwen Stefani, and Bloc Party remixed tracks. The rest are solid as well and I hope you enjoy them all. And for fans of my Gossip Girl series fear not, vol 09 will be posted later today or early tomorrow. After all I do have three volumes to go to catch up. Also, later this week I’ll be posting my best albums of the year. You might be a little surprised at my choices {as in you might have never listened to my number one and two slots}.

Britney Spears

Where have you gone sweet Britney of old.  What happened between Whoops I Did It Again and this present day state of shaved heads, drug accusations, and all the other shenanigans?  Honestly, what happened?  And fans, please note, I’m not attacking Britney here, I’m just asking some questions that we would all like an honest answer to.  So before you go Crystal O Jones on me take a moment and really think about how America took a mousketeer and turned her into an unfit mother.

And before I forget, let me explain the reference I made above to Crystal O Jones.  Awhile back I had a post about Britney Spears and I received this comment from a devout Britney supporter.  Crystal wrote “I think Britney would get better if all the A-holes would leave her be aspecially the paparazzi they suck! Put yourself in her place, if someone was following you around with a camera in your face watching your every move just to see you mess up wouldn’t that make you angry? I’d hate it, I’d get sick of it, and I’d probabely flip out too! Plus people today need to seperate fact from fiction. Just because someone prints it doesn’t make it true. So leave brit’ alone and let the singer/songwriter come back to us the way we know and love her. Brit’ I’m your biggest fan and I wish all the happiness in the world and may God Bless You!!!

Now honestly I do think that there’s a bit too much hype and paparazzi around Ms. Spears as of late.  There is a line that needs to be drawn between the public and private lives of celebrities, but it was Ms. Spears herself, who posed naked for pictures while pregnant, who significantly blurred those lines to begin with.  I’m just saying that maybe Britney needs to work on bringing sexy back.  Or at least work on getting her life back to a normal center.  Honestly, even China Daily is reporting on how off kilter she’s been as of late.

All of that hullabaloo aside here’s a track that I stumbled upon earlier this week here on the interwebs.  It’s a rather clever remixing of Britney’s track Me Against the Music which originally appeared on her fourth studio album In The Zone (iTunes) and featured Madonna.  Oh how the mighty have fallen.  This rendition is a remix by the laptop gurus Justice and it’s deserving of a couple of minutes of your time.

mp3 : Britney Spears - Me Against the Music (Justice Remix)

No, really, where did the sweet Britney of yesterday disappear to?  I really would like to know.

Britney Spears?

By now the blogosphere has slaughtered Brit enough.  We’ve seen people and critics and even friends come out swinging.  We’ve seen awkward cries to stop attacking Britney and just leave her alone.  I think my favorite response to all of this crazy that surrounds Ms. Spears was from her ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake when he appeared recently on Oprah.  When O asked him about the entire situation all he had to say was that “she has an incredible heart” and “she’s a very talented and lovable person.”  When O brought up the fact that some people thought Britney is close to a breakdown and she’s completely crazy J. Tim smoothly answered, “oh!  Are people really saying that?  I guess I didn’t know that.”

Stay classy Mr. JT.  And stay yourself Brit.  You have to admit, even with adding a lot of weight and making possibly the worst appearance, ever, at the MTV VMA’s [but really, aren't almost all of the VMA appearances lame] didn’t do a lot to bring the sexy back to Spears.  But maybe she’ll take some advice from Gwen Stefani, “take a chance you stupid ho,” go back to the studio, and the gym, and drop a killer video for this song.  It could use one.

mp3 : Britney Spears - Gimme More

And then again, maybe she won’t.  I mean she really should take some time away from drinking, partying, and basically proving she’s independent to stay home and raise her two boys.  Maybe that’s too much to ask for a pop princess.  Maybe.
