Cinematic Orchestra track To Build a Home

A few times a year a random song will jump out of pop culture and insidiously infect your brain.  At first it will feel like a simple melody you seem to have felt before, a sense of deja vu, a feeling of comfortable sameness.  At first you will ignore the song in the same way that you ignore how comfortable your familiar hoodie has become; you take it for granted.

This is how it was, for me, with the standout track from Cinematic Orchestra’s 2007 album Ma Fleur (amazon) (itunes).  The remainder of the album I can’t seem to recall, but for some reason this melody haunted my brain for the last three odd years before again being brought to life in recent pop culture.  First there was the preview for an upcoming movie entitled Another Earth.  However ridiculous and simple the premise of the movie (I mean, let’s be serious, the other Earth pictured throughout the preview never rotates on an axis, and doesn’t seem to wreak havoc on our tidal system, our orbit in the solar system, etc.) the soundtrack they chose for the preview was well done.  This was followed a few weeks later by a link my brother dropped me to an absolutely breath taking memorial video on vimeo called LA Light.

mp3 : Cinematic Orchestra – That Home and To Build a Home

The first track is the standalone track as recorded in the studio.  The second “extended edition” combines two tracks from the album in a seamless manner and, in my personal opinion, lends an already melancholic melody an additional measure of poignancy and gravitas.
