I’ve had the good fortune of owning a copy of Audrye Sessions’ self titled album, Audrye Sessions (amazon) (itunes), for the past week or so and it’s been getting heavy rotation time in my car. Playing an album in my car, especially multiple times in a row, means that the album is competing with stalwarts like Sufjan Stevens and The Weakerthans. I like to sing along to music in the car and to that end what I usually listen to is what I know I’ll like.
This album is hard to define. From song to song I kept thinking “oh, these guys sound like {insert name of a popular rock band here}.” I think there are moments on this album that they share a sound with The Fray and Coldplay, amongst others, but the band I think they most parallel is Muse. And I say all of these things as compliments, trust me, and yet even with that in mind I can’t quite encapsulate all that Audrye Sessions is. I mean I’d even throw the Beatles and Queen into the mix as obvious influences. It would be best if you simply listen to these tracks and ignore what I’m saying.
mp3 : Audrye Sessions - Dust and Bones
mp3 : Audrye Sessions - Waltz 2 (Elliot Smith Cover)
The first track, Dust and Bones, is the closing song on the album and I must say that it is as close to creating a perfect rock song as you can get. From the intricate intro {which sounds hauntingly like the theme song for Fringe} to the way that the song builds and builds, twice, there’s just not much else you could add to make it into a better song. To be sure, this song is best listened to at a very loud volume and I imagine it translates very well to a live set. The second track is a random cover that I ripped from their myspace page. Elliot Smith was brilliant and it’s always nice to hear a talented band pay some proper respect.

good band.
I know what you mean; they are a bit unclassifiable…completely fab though; so pleased your back…thankyou
Just wanted to say welcome back! (I just realized you were back today) I’ve been lurking for sometime, and have to say that TWF is probably the best music blog out there. You consistently post great music, and very interesting critiques and such.
All that being said, you should check out the group called Coeur de Pirate. Yes, it’s French music, but the lead singer’s voice is beautiful, and the piano playing is wonderful. I think you’ll enjoy them! Check out the song Comme des Enfants. You should really enjoy!
Nice review, its pretty close to what I would say about them.
They are one of my favorite bands now, I remember hearing Dust and Bones on a local radio station, and instantly falling in love with their sound. I somehow managed to find a CD that wasnt officially released, called “Braille”. It came out in 07, and their new CD, is mostly remakes of those older songs, and a few new ones. Its definitely one of my favorite albums, with Dust and Bones being my favorite track.
Ive seen them live twice, going again next month, and I must say, they are quite amazing. If they come to a town near you, make your way out there because its well worth it. Unfortunately, they havent played dust and bones =/, BUT, they play a new song called “Bone Dry” and its amazing. At the last show, we got Ryan to give us an Encore, he came back on the stage by himself and played us “Waltz 2″, the Elliot Smith cover.
I cant wait to see them again, rep this band!
I second that they are an amazing group to see live. Their sound was amazing and crisp, honestly, they almost outshined the headliner, Manchester Orchestra for that reason.
Love his voice, though. As my buddy put it, he sounds like a young Thom Yorke live. Hope you get to see em. And I just discovered your blog. Judging from this post, I think I’ll keep coming back.
Audrye Sessions are amazing live and one of the hardest working bands out there. Great people, big hearts and bigger talent. Support them!
Off the hook music.
