Ladytron

I listen to Elliot Smith when I want to be sad, Ben Folds Live when I want to sing along to every single song on an entire album, and Ladytron when I want to be confused as to what I should feel. There’s a wealth of emotions associated with Ladytron’s slightly depressing, slightly muffled, electronic mire. If Cut Copy {my post from yesterday} took all that glittered about the eighties and put it through a twenty first century strainer then Ladytron has taken all the repressed memories of that glam decade and done the same. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to be depressed or be overjoyed that other people in this world can find beauty and love in the parts of life that aren’t immediately cuddly and warm. The track Black Cat comes from Ladytron’s upcoming album Velocifero and from this first single it appears as it’ll be a darker, more dreary, affair than Light and Magic (iTunes) was.

I’ve not seen them live, nor will I probably get a chance to do so {they feel a bit like a flash in the pan phenomenon}, but I reckon a set mixing Marilyn Manson mall goth with Smashing Pumpkins dreary pastiche would fit them well. Especially if everything, all the time, was black. In other news, I felt like I should include this track below as so continue the ruse. Enjoy it if you dare.

Did you really mean to put a Rick Astley song in the last Ladytron song link?

  3. 3 billy

look at the comment in the ID3 tag of the last song. then wiki or google it if you still don’t get it.

Oh come now. Four albums in, you can hardly call Ladytron a Flash in the Pan. You want a Flash in the Pan, how about Flash in the Pan (the 70’s band). Anyhoo, I’ve seen Ladytron twice in concert (Metro in Chicago; El Rey in LA). Both times, they blew the roof off the joints. I was expecting some robotronic kinda show straight out of Goth Disney, but instead the singers work their inner Fergies and get every body in the room jumping. Definitely go see em and judge for yourself.

i will go see them if i get a chance. i was only referring to their flash-in-the-panness due to their incredible popularity as of late. i’m assured they’ll be around for albums to come, but their insane level of popularity seems a bit… panny.

Seriously, Billy. These guys have been around for a decade now… it’s a bit hard to be a ‘flash-in-the-pan’ after that much time - this will be their fourth album! If anything, they’re just getting more popular… I think people are just excited to hear some of their new tunes, regardless of their current ‘level of popularity’.
While I agree that “Black Cat” isn’t their best tune, from what I’ve heard of the rest of the LP, it should be great.
Also, they’re finally on a North American label that ‘gets’ them (Nettwerk), and will rightfully market the hell out of ‘em, so kudos to them.
Oh, and Ladytron’s last album was “Witching Hour”, not “Light & Magic”, and it was probably their best yet…
    Go see ‘em live!

again, i understand Ladytron is here to stay. but i honestly must say that i don’t think their popularity will be here that long. nettwerk will probably help their appeal quite a bit, they do an amazing job with their other acts, but i still feel like Ladytron has been far over-hyped lately and will quickly fade from view this summer. especially with all the mega-popular bands with releases scheduled for this calendar year.

While there is no doubt they they have had increased popularity with each album, that actually defines success. Flash in the pan is a comment made without regard to history or in this case sales. They are an absolutely fun band live, so one should withhold judgment and unfounded commentary without any insight. I could point to your last umpteen posts for “flash in the pan” acts, but it would not be fair to do so. I am sorry you are not smarter and somehow your pointless rant ended up on a blog aggregator.

this is to CB, mago, faucet, and anyone else who’s actually commenting here now. i will not apologize for saying Ladytron’s popularity is going to be flash in the pan. mark my words. their new album will come out, they’ll be incredibly popular for about a month, and they won’t end up making any end of the year best of 2008 lists. at all. there’s a lot of hype surrounding their new album {largely due to the work of nettwerk} but i can’t imagine a scenario in which Ladytron is going to maintain their current level of popularity much past their album’s release date.

seroiusly, get over it. y’all sound like i just personally insulted your mom or something. Ladytron = not that amazing. i like their sound, but it’s not going to capture the world.

    Ladytron = not that good.

Seriously, I don’t undertand why the three people composing their fanbase all decided to comment on your blog. I’d be surprised if anyone even liked their new album, let alone that they would be popular for a month.

And seriously, did the second two douchebags just repeat the same thing as the first douchebag without reading what you wrote in response to him? Do some people still not know how a comment section works?

  11. 11 Droll SteVan

And, more seriously, did that first comment about the whole flash-in-the-pan thing really include this line?

“instead the singers work their inner Fergies and get every body in the room jumping”

Are you f***ing kidding me? Who in their right mind wants a band to work their “inner Fergies”? Everytime I hear a Fergie song or am unlucky enough to come across one of her music videos as I flip through channels, I seriously contemplate killing myself. Everything about Fergie is just wrong. I mean, seriously, I think Farrakhan Faucet should growing out of the awkward pre-pubescent Jr. High girl phase she’s stuck in before she goes to another concert. Seriously, I programmed my television recently to skip over E!, MTV, and VH1 so I wouldn’t have to put up with mistakenly flipping across a channel and seeing her face.

Wow, looks like quite a heated blog post!

Personally I cannot wait to hear the new album, it should be as good as (if not better) than Witching Hour (which was their best).

For those saying they’re a flash in the pan, well hardly for a band who’ve been releasing singles and albums for almost 10 years!

As for the fan base, trust me there are thousands of fans worldwide.

I knew this kind of backlash would happen against Ladytron. People are so fickle. They complain when a band don’t get hyped, then when the band ARE hyped the same people start hating on them BECAUSE of the hype.

Good music is good music, wherever it comes from and how popular it is.

  13. 13 Jonathon

Oh Richard, you stupid bitch. We all realize that they have released singles and albums for the past ten years. But none of them were made half as much talk among blogs. Billy isn’t saying that They will fold after this album, he’s just saying much of their intrigued first time listeners will. They just aren’t good enough to hold the attention of the average person’s musical sense.
Granted, your musical sense may be below average. But I see no argument there, seeing as how you are defending ladytron.

  14. 14 billy

thanks jonathan. i could not have said it better myself.

  15. 15 Paul

Oh yes…I’m going to watch them play Liverpool tonight. I saw MSTRKRFT last night. Best two days of my life!!!!

  16. 16 billy

hope you enjoyed the show. i’d kill to be in liverpool right now, but not really for the ladytron show.

  17. 17 Paul

I live in Liverpool dude. Great city. You a Brit? I seem to assume all bloggers are damn Yanks unless otherwise stated. :-)

“They just aren’t good enough to hold the attention of the average person’s musical sense.”

Some random billboard hits from the 90s. (OK just pretend it’s all R&B and you’ll have the “best” songs of 2008)

    * 1995 The Rembrandts – “I’ll Be There For You” (number one for eight weeks)
    * 1996 No Doubt – “Don’t Speak” (number one for sixteen weeks)
    * 1997 Sugar Ray featuring Super Cat – “Fly” (number one for six weeks)
    * 1997 Will Smith - “Men in Black” (number one for four weeks)
    * 1997 The Cardigans – “Lovefool” (number two for eight weeks)
    * 1998 Natalie Imbruglia – “Torn” (number one for eleven weeks)
    * 1998 Goo Goo Dolls – “Iris” (number one for eighteen weeks)

Apparently, these artists are better than that elitist shit.
    Big Wille Style!
