Say Hi

I’ve liked the sound of Eric Elbogen {great name by the way} since his little musical outfit was called by the somewhat wordy, entirely cheeky, title Say Hi To Your Mom. Over the years the players and cast members have changed, instruments have been added and subtracted, but the essential creative vision of Eric has remained. On his latest effort, which might strike you as his best, he creates a fluid form of indie pop that flows well from track to track or serves as a perfect garnish in the middle of a randomized playlist.

mp3 : Say Hi - Northwestern Girls
mp3 : Say Hi - Toil and Trouble
mp3 : Say Hi - Zero To Love

Although the track Zero To Love has quite possibly the best indie romance title of 2008 the track Northwestern Girls is my favorite of the album. All three of these tracks hail from Eric’s latest album, The Wishes and The Glitch (iTunes), is a solid effort by a veteran indie craftsman. There’s a certain melodramatic theme that filters through the album which is most prevalent on Northwestern Girls; a song which follows its title and proves to be an ode to the ladies of the northwest. It’s as if he captured his love for the aforementioned girls and filtered it through the misty, slushy, rainy weather that’s found around these women. When the chorus repeats a plaintive “it must be in the air here” you must agree. Also, and I’m just saying this, I think Say Hi would be the perfect, yes perfect, touring mates for The National. Listen closely to the instrumental break on Northwestern Girls and then listen to the song Fake Empire by The National.

You’re a zillion percent right about The National; it was what I couldn’t put my finger on listening to Zero to Love.

Eric from Say Hi is genuinely cool guy. We did an interview with him from SXSW and there’s a great clip where he talks about this record being different because of less lyrics about robots and tractorbeams!
