the strokes were revolutionary. but that was, what, about eight years ago? the killers also were genre bending/defining, but again, at least four years ago. vampire weekend is good, but i don't think all that radical/new. {also, suf was about eights years ago now, or more}. i just feel like a lot of the new inventive sounds come from smaller places. now there might be a load of factors that, well, factor into this decision of mine, but it feels like the best come from overseas. {the most obvious thing that could be skewing my perception is that i live here. hence i hear all the music that is in the states. so i inherently hear a lot of garbage with the good. in the case of other countries the garbage never gets enough word of mouth to cross borders, let alone oceans, so i'm left only ever hearing about the bands that truly have talent}.

oh, and in other news, Cloud Cult dominates and is extremely original {even if they don't seem to get any recognition}

What about the Strokes or Vampire Weekend (seeing as you posted about them recently)... I mean, they both came from New York... What about Sufjan Stevens, he's from Michigan and was quite the breakthrough... I mean, come on, you can't just expect a breakthrough artist to emerge every month... That's just ridiculous.
