The Best Albums of 2007

At long last here are my top ten albums released during the past twelve months. Download all the tracks and play them loud, support the artist by buying their albums, merchandise, or concert tickets, and most of all continue to enjoy great music. This list was ridiculously hard to create due to the amount of talent in the musical realm, but, these are the albums that I was most excited about in 2007. {note : in the list below the artist name links to their website, the album title links to the album on amazon, and the iTunes link will open iTunes to the appropriate information}

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

01 : Cloud CultThe Meaning of 8 (iTunes)

Easily the most cathartic album I’ve ever heard the general storyline of this album chronicles the path frontman Craig Minowa took while coming to terms with the death of his son. Most of the tracks on this album have to do with what little Kaidin’s life would have been like {he would’ve turned eight this year} or how he inspired his father and those he met with the joy of life. It was a very close call between Cloud Cult and The Weakerthans for album of the year, but this band from Minneapolis pulled it out in the end. From beginning to end there is not a single note that I would change about The Meaning of 8.

mp3 : Cloud Cult – Take Your Medicine
mp3 : Cloud Cult – Your 8th Birthday
mp3 : Cloud Cult – Purpose

02 : The WeakerthansReunion Tour (iTunes)

Second place, and by a very slim margin, goes to one of my favorite bands of all time, The Weakerthans. Coming a full four years after their previous effort, this studio album had a lot of fans wondering if rust and age would tamper with the signature lyrical and melodic brilliance of The Weakerthans. All fears were laid to rest after one listen, though, with the only complaint being it clocks in under forty minutes. John Samson tells these wonderful vignettes about empty rooms, curling tournaments, and runaway cats that are filled with a sense of forlorn truth. Something in this album rings true on every listen. If you’ve never heard The Weakerthans their newest disc is easily a wonderful starting point.

mp3 : The Weakerthans – Tournament of Hearts
mp3 : The Weakerthans – Virtue the Cat Explains Her Departure
mp3 : The Weakerthans – Sun in an Empty Room

03 : RadioheadIn Rainbows

Not much else could be written or said about this album other than what has already been said. Radiohead tops many of the best of lists across various publications and blogs. They released their album completely on their own, with their own website, and charged nothing for the music if that’s what you chose to pay. They bucked convention with this release, just as they’ve continually created new and innovative sounds on each of their albums. This, their seventh studio album and first in four years, is an amazing musical achievement even without the marketing {or lack thereof} hype.

mp3 : Radiohead – Reckoner
mp3 : Radiohead – Videotape

04 : Arcade FireNeon Bible (iTunes)

Although many a rabid fan and critic balked at the slightly new direction Arcade Fire went on their sophomore effort I challenge you to find another band that made this interesting, layered, and talented a second studio album. Moving away from stories involving apocalypse and funerals this album instead finds its voice in a social commentary of sorts {which is perfect when you’re influenced by Bruce Springsteen}. I thought this album was a perfect follow up to Funeral. Yes, it is different, but so are we.

mp3 : Arcade Fire – (Antichrist Television Blues)
mp3 : Arcade Fire – Intervention

05 : Bishop AllenThe Broken String (iTunes)

Throughout 2006 Bishop Allen, which is a collaborative effort between Justin Rice, Christian Rudder, and various backing musicians, released twelve EP’s; one for each month. It was with much anticipation, then, that I awaited their first proper studio full length this past July. And Bishop Allen did not disappoint with The Broken String. From start to end the storytelling, the music, the melodies, and the undeniable fun of the album had me playing it for anyone who would listen. Over five months later it still amazes me that this amount of quality music was put on one album.

mp3 : Bishop Allen – The Monitor
mp3 : Bishop Allen – The Chinatown Bus

06 : Foo FigthersEchoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (iTunes)

Foo Fighters released their most mature and grounded album to date while finding a way to showcase Dave Grohl’s massive talent without the use of a sprawling double album. From start to finish this album shows the diversity of the entire Foo Fighter’s cannon while always keeping you on the edge of your seat, anticipating what song is coming next. From a pure rock anthem like Come Alive, to the bombast of The Pretender, down to the the ecstasy found on The Ballad of Beaconsfield Miners, there is no stone left unturned on this, the best rock album of the year.

mp3 : Foo Figthers – The Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners
mp3 : Foo Fighters – Come Alive

07 : Sigur RosHvarf/Heim (iTunes)

Sigur Ros is easily my favorite band that I cannot seem to describe to others. Or for that matter get other people to listen to. They’re a band out of the great land of Iceland and lead singer Jonsi sings in one of the most beautiful falsetto voices I’ve ever heard. If the angels from on high sang in Icelandic then this is what the music backing them would sound like. This release was a double album with the disc labelled Hvarf containing studio versions of previously unreleased tracks and the disc called Heim containing acoustic versions of previous favorites.

mp3 : Sigur Ros – Heysatan
mp3 : Sigur Ros – Staralfur

08 : BeirutThe Flying Club Cup (iTunes)

Originally scoring much higher in my list Beirut fell to number eight after repeated listenings. Although this album didn’t have the staying power I thought it would have it still is a solid effort from Zach Condon throughout the mix as he brings his particular ecclectic/gypsy/folk/balkan style of music and makes it a true edition to the great new American Folk wave. There’s something in his music that cannot be found anywhere else. Due most likely to his extensive traveling throughout eastern Europe during his developmental years and the fact that a wrist injury keeps him from playing the guitar properly.

mp3 : Beirut – Guyamas Sonora

09 : Band of HorsesCease to Begin (iTunes)

The critics who hated and/or panned this album when it was released have almost nothing in common with me. I, for one, cannot fathom what they were looking for in the second studio album from Band of Horses. Cease to Begin showcases a sound and style that are uniquely theirs; from the driving guitar rhythms to the unique crooning style of frontman Ben Bridwell. I thought this album was solid from start to finish with the inclusion of a few incredible tracks like Island on the Coast and Is There A Ghost. Band of Horses is one of the best bands in the past couple of years and I’ve been excited about their music since their first release.

mp3 : Band of Horses – Island on the Coast

10 : Sea WolfLeaves in the River (iTunes)

Rounding out the top ten albums of 2007 is this little gem by Sea Wolf. This band is the brainchild of Alex Brown Church, who formerly played with the band Irving, and he incorporates a variety of devices and sounds to tell his stories. Although at times the record can sound like a smooth amalgamation of various sources, in the end it is a blissful thirty five minute mosey through Alex’s life, music, and stories.

mp3 : Sea Wolf – Leaves In The River

And there you have it. In my humble opinion those were the best albums of 2007. Other noteworthy albums that didn’t quite make the top ten include In Our Bedroom After The War by Stars, Wednesdays by Wakey!Wakey!, From Here We Go Sublime by The Field, Sawdust by The Killers, Magic by Bruce Springsteen, B Sides Live by Zach Williams, Graduation by Kanye West, and We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank by Modest Mouse. As talented and wonderful as this past year has been I’m looking forward to 2008 when there will be new albums by my favorites Sufjan Stevens, Cloud Cult, the Magnetic Fields, the Postal Service, and Weezer.

For those of you who just found my blog take a minute a peruse other posts here at The World Forgot. I hope you enjoyed yourself this year, 2008 is sure to bring something amazing to everyone.

Gossip Girl vol 09

I’m sorry for the long delay in this series. I was a bit caught up in the holidays, the end of the year, all of the lists I feel obligated to make, etc. But this series is back and better than ever. It seems as if the more I poke fun at the music used on Gossip Girl the better the selections have become on future episodes. So I hesitate to say anything good, at all, about the soundtrack until they incorporate some little known acts from New York into the lineup. I’m pushing for Zach Williams or Wakey!Wakey! Think about it. Wouldn’t it be great if the little Manhattanites went to a cool indie show at Rockwood or Southpaw? I think that would make an excellent date for Dan and Serena or Jenny and Nate {oh, I said it!}.

These songs appeared in the episode where it was revealed that Blair struggles from bulimia and has received counseling for this before. I’m sure Tom Cruise would’ve hated this episode, but who cares.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {link removed by request}

mp3 : Nelly Furtado – Promiscuous (feat Timbaland)
mp3 : Ok Go – Here It Goes Again
mp3 : Bonobo – Recurring
mp3 : Sebastian Tellier – La Ritournelle {link removed by request}
- buy it on iTunes and help out the indie label that promotes Mr. Tellier
- or get it direct from the label, Lucky Number Music
mp3 : Vanessa Carlton – Nolita Fairytale
mp3 : Will Dailey – Grand Opening

Enjoy the songs my friends. The ambient/insturmental track by Bonobo sounds achingly familiar but I cannot seem to place where I’ve heard this sound before. I’m thinking maybe, wait, I got it. It sounds just like Imogen Heap without vocals. Trust me, that’s what it is. The OK Go track is awesome, but who hasn’t heard it a thousand times by now? Also, the Sebastian Tellier track could easily have passed for an instrumental remix of a melodic Radiohead song. They clearly sound similar. The Nelly Furtado track is only popping because of Timbaland and the Vanessa Carlton track could be avoided. And in the end the Will Dailey track is solid but largely forgettable.

BOTR vol 01

Welcome welcome welcome to a new series I hope to be posting at the end of each month. Some of you are already aware that I have a Best of the Month (BOTM) series that I maintain here on The World Forgot, but this is something new. I present to you Best of the Remix, or BOTR for short. I’ve noticed a wonderful trend lately that has made the remix of a popular song almost as ubiquitous as the original recording. It seems as if anyone with a laptop and a few spare hours manages to remix, reblip, or rework a song into something new. Now, granted, not all of these remixes are any good, but how are you to know the good from the bad? That’s where I come in. Presented here for your listening pleasure are the best remixes I heard during the previous month. Enjoy these tracks and come back next month for vol 02.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

mp3 : Andy Williams – It’s The Most Wonderful Time of The Year (A Shrift Remix)
mp3 : Bloc Party – Flux (GoodBooks Magnetism Mix)
mp3 : Britney Spears – Piece of Me (Bimbo Jones Club Mix)
mp3 : Daft Punk – Da Funk (Armand Van Helden’s Ten Minutes of Funk Mix)
mp3 : Daft Punk – Human After All (Peterdragontail Remix)
mp3 : The Go! Team – Grip Like a Vice (Mojib Remix)
mp3 : Gwen Stefani – Hollaback Girl (Think Quick 8bit Remix)
mp3 : Justice – D.A.N.C.E. (CFCF Remix)
mp3 : Kings of Convenience – I Don’t Know (Mojib Remix)
mp3 : Radiohead – Videotape (Ring Trick Mix)
mp3 : Sigur Ros – Staralfur (Mojib Break of Dawn Remix)
mp3 : The Bee Gees – Stayin Alive (Teddybears Remix)
mp3 : Thom Yorke – Analyse (Various Remix)
mp3 : Thom Yorke – The Clock (Surgeon Remix)
mp3 : TV On The Radio – Staring At The Sun (Bryan Hyde Remix)

Notable standouts in this crowded first class are the Justice, TV On The Radio, Gwen Stefani, and Bloc Party remixed tracks. The rest are solid as well and I hope you enjoy them all. And for fans of my Gossip Girl series fear not, vol 09 will be posted later today or early tomorrow. After all I do have three volumes to go to catch up. Also, later this week I’ll be posting my best albums of the year. You might be a little surprised at my choices {as in you might have never listened to my number one and two slots}.

BOTM vol 03

Another month has come and gone, almost, and it is once again time for a little Best of the Month roundup. As I’ve said, and explained, before I have a lot more free time than you do. I don’t do much with my life other than listen to music and mess around with friends so, consequently, I have a lot of time to scour the interwebs to find the best music you probably missed on the first go round. These tracks were found using a variety of sources including Hype, Elbows, random blogs, and other music sites. Enjoy the tracks, I hope you all had a magnificent Christmas.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

mp3 : Jens Lekman – I’m Leaving You Because I Don’t Love You
mp3 : Lightspeed Champion – Heart in a Cage (Live The Strokes Cover)
mp3 : Lupe Fiasco – Streets on Fire
mp3 : Macon Grayson – Minnesota Weatherman
mp3 : Mylo – Sweet Child of Mine (Live Guns N Roses Cover)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens – Far Physician’s Son
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens – How Can The Stone Remain
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens – In the Words of the Governor
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens – The Transfigurartion (Live Orchestral Version)
mp3 : The Clark Brothers – Gimme Shelter (Live Rolling Stones Cover)
mp3 : The Killers – Great Big Sled (Live)
mp3 : The Magnetic Fields – California Girls

Definitely check out the tracks by Lightspeed Champion, the newcomers The Clark Brothers, Mylo, and the new song from the upcoming Magnetic Fields album. The rest of the tracks are pretty awesome as well, especially the very rare Sufjan songs that were graciously given to my by many a concerned reader during my Seven Days of Sufjan Stevens. {if you look closely you’ll notice none of these songs are a remixed track. stay tuned for my inaugural post in the new BOTR series later this week}. Also, does anyone else think that Lupe Fiasco is very similar to Moby mixed with Will Smith? Whatever your opinion this track by Lupe Fiasco is phenomenal. Also, if Macon Greyson isn’t winning the award for ‘band who sounds the most like Lynryd Skynryd’ I don’t know who is.

Scott Boehner

Labelling yourself a new wave artist basically means I have no idea what you’re attempting to sound like. In the case of Scott Boehner, also known as Maple Plain or Scotty and the Help, new wave music sounds very glitchy and beep laden while maintaining a strong melodic narrative. Think the Killers meets Dntel meets Joy Electric meets a Commodore 64. If that’s not confusing you enough then I need to try harder in my future reviews of new wave musicians.

All that aside Scott Boehner writes vignettes about being kidnapped for love, what Robinson Crusoe would do if he was on Mars, pleading with Jesus to save us as Santa is dead, or other such slightly off kilter storylines. Although it would appear on the surface that he doesn’t take his music very seriously I would say it is anything but silly computer blips a kid looped together with Acid Pro. Granted, Scotty and the Help isn’t a sound for everyone in the world, but there is a maturity of composition and melody mixed in with his sense of humour. Three of the tracks below appear on Scott’s 2006 release Creature or Companion (iTunes).

mp3 : Scotty and the Help – Santa Claus is Dead
mp3 : Scotty and the Help – Kidnapped For Love
mp3 : Scotty and the Help – Mr. Atomic
mp3 : Scotty and the Help – Robinson Crusoe on Mars

Recently a friend of mine who maintains a video blog {not the traditional ‘save britney’ or ‘this is my life every day… it’s dull’ type of vlogging. more of a video archive} took the trailer for I Am Legend and put Scott’s song Last Man on Earth {written and recorded in 2006} to it. It’s gotten a bit of attention over on YouTube. You should check it out here. It’s strange how perfectly the song fits the premise of the movie.

For those of you who still aren’t sold on Scott Boehner you can check out his side project, Maple Plain, which he describes as “a very Eels/Pedro/Okkervil River-inspired thingy.” I’d say that description pretty much hits the nail on the head. With this outfit Scott creates a slightly melancholic brand of folk music filled with simple, but somehow tragic, layers of sentiment and longing.

mp3 : Maple Plain – On The Inside
mp3 : Maple Plain – What I Came Here For

Personally I feel as if What I Came Here For is the best track of the bunch I put up here. At times I could see this track even reflecting the modern day resurgence of gypsy, carnival, eccentricism found in acts like Beirut.

John Neilson

I was sitting here on a rainy Saturday afternoon, thinking about life and all that comes with it, and I realized that it doesn’t really feel like Christmas.  What happened?  Maybe it’s because I was out of the States for two holiday seasons in a row and I don’t know what Christmas feels like anymore.  Maybe it’s because climate change has taken virtually all of the cold nights and blustery snows and turned them into random spring like rainstorms.  I can’t really put my finger on it.

But all of this is beside the point.  In this boring raining afternoon I decided to do a little cleaning out of my email inbox.  And I stumbled upon this little gem by John Neilson.  He’s a musician of the singer songwriter sort and this piano song felt perfect when matched up with dreary weather and the early darkness so prevalent during the winter season.

Chris Garneau

Chris garnered a bunch of press about eleven months ago when his debut full length, Music for Tourists (iTunes), dropped.  It even led some people to predict Chris’ rise into many of the ubiquitous best albums of 2007 lists on every blog and website.  While I have yet to see Chris appear on a single top album list it doesn’t detract from the quality of his music.  If anything I would attribute his Houdini act to timing as opposed to talent.  I mean honestly, who remembers albums from almost a full year ago?

Recently he has been touring to help promote his new EP called C Sides (iTunes).  I’m not entirely sure if this is just a cheeky play on the phrase b-sides or if it actually references the ocean theme apparent in The Island Song.  Or maybe his mates all call him C, so he thought that titling his EP C Sides would really be self titling this little five song ditty.  What I do know is that the track below, It’s Almost Christmas, hails from this new EP and is both elegant and perfectly timed for the holiday season.  The other two tracks can be found on the aforementioned Music for Tourists.

mp3 : Chris Garneau – It’s Almost Christmas
mp3 : Chris Garneau – Black & Blue
mp3 : Chris Garneau – Relief

While much attention has been drawn to the similarities bewteen Chris Garneau and Rufus Wainwright the real similiarty I hear when I listen to Chris has my brain alinging him in the camp of Regina Spektor.  Have a listen and be your own judge.  Chris makes solid music.

Harry Connick Jr

What would the holiday season be without the modern day counterpart to Bing, Andy, and Frank?  I label Harry Connick, Jr. as a contemporary counterpart to those classic three because he tends to create in a timeless style.  He’s not as present-day-centric as Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, or Sufjan.  He plays jazz with some swing {and swagger} and he doesn’t care who knows it.  Personally I find some of his songs a bit too much, and I prefer Harry’s acting career to his music, but it still wouldn’t be a true holiday season without some of Harry for the Holidays (iTunes).

mp3 : Harry Connick Jr – Frosty The Snowman
mp3 : Harry Connick Jr – Jingle Bells
mp3 : Harry Connick Jr – The Christmas Waltz

I chose these three tracks because they showcase the breadth of Harry’s trademark swing.  This will be one of the last remaining Christmas posts I do as I’m working on BOTM vol 3, BOTR vol 1, and my year ending list of best albums {you’ll probably be surprised what my top ten are} for next week.

Arcade Fire

In 2002, yes long before their debut was released, Arcade Fire sat down with some friends and guest musicians and sang some ditties.  An important addendum to this recording is that front man Win has claimed he doesn’t sing on any of the tracks.  The rumour is that the vocals are from a variety of sources all attempting to imitate Win Butler’s characteristic wobble.  Regardless of the actual history the tracks are a gem for any true fan of Arcade Fire.

mp3 : Arcade Fire – A Very Arcade Xmas
mp3 : Arcade Fire – Chestnuts Roasting
mp3 : Arcade Fire – Oh Holy Night

I’m not sure if anyone really wants this version of Chestnuts Roasting as it honestly sounds as if there was a bit to much of the good stuff passed around Win’s apartment that night.  All three tracks I’ve posted here sound a bit like a joke or parody of Christmas music and I take it that was the sound these cheeky Canadians were aiming for.  Easily the one you need to hear is A Very Arcade Xmas.

Bright Eyes

In 2002 Conor Oberst got together with a load of friends and recored an album simply entitled A Christmas Album.  The album is only available for purchase from Saddle Creek and all profits of the album sale go to benefit the Nebraska AIDS Project.  If you would like to buy the album you can go here to order a copy or you can go straight to the Nebraska AIDS Project website for more information on their organization.   Below are three tracks from this album which is a nice modern Bright Eyes style take on a lot of traditional Christmas fare.

mp3 : Bright Eyes – God Rest Ye Merry Gentelmen
mp3 : Bright Eyes – Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
mp3 : Bright Eyes – The Night Before Christmas

The last track, The Night Before Christmas, is a dramatic reading of the classic Christmas poem set to a plinking piano track.  It’s a wonderful way to hear The Night Before Christmas.  Guests on the album include Jake Bellows, Gretta Cohn, Armand Costanzo, Denver Dalley, Stephanie Drootin, Orenda Fink, Neely Jenkins, Jiha Lee, Andy Lemaster, Mike Mogis, Matt Oberst, Stephen Pedersen, Blake Sennett, Macey Taylor, and Nick White.
