The Best Albums of 2007

At long last here are my top ten albums released during the past twelve months. Download all the tracks and play them loud, support the artist by buying their albums, merchandise, or concert tickets, and most of all continue to enjoy great music. This list was ridiculously hard to create due to the amount of talent in the musical realm, but, these are the albums that I was most excited about in 2007. {note : in the list below the artist name links to their website, the album title links to the album on amazon, and the iTunes link will open iTunes to the appropriate information}

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

01 : Cloud Cult - The Meaning of 8 (iTunes)

Easily the most cathartic album I’ve ever heard the general storyline of this album chronicles the path frontman Craig Minowa took while coming to terms with the death of his son. Most of the tracks on this album have to do with what little Kaidin’s life would have been like {he would’ve turned eight this year} or how he inspired his father and those he met with the joy of life. It was a very close call between Cloud Cult and The Weakerthans for album of the year, but this band from Minneapolis pulled it out in the end. From beginning to end there is not a single note that I would change about The Meaning of 8.

mp3 : Cloud Cult - Take Your Medicine
mp3 : Cloud Cult - Your 8th Birthday
mp3 : Cloud Cult - Purpose

02 : The Weakerthans - Reunion Tour (iTunes)

Second place, and by a very slim margin, goes to one of my favorite bands of all time, The Weakerthans. Coming a full four years after their previous effort, this studio album had a lot of fans wondering if rust and age would tamper with the signature lyrical and melodic brilliance of The Weakerthans. All fears were laid to rest after one listen, though, with the only complaint being it clocks in under forty minutes. John Samson tells these wonderful vignettes about empty rooms, curling tournaments, and runaway cats that are filled with a sense of forlorn truth. Something in this album rings true on every listen. If you’ve never heard The Weakerthans their newest disc is easily a wonderful starting point.

mp3 : The Weakerthans - Tournament of Hearts
mp3 : The Weakerthans - Virtue the Cat Explains Her Departure
mp3 : The Weakerthans - Sun in an Empty Room

03 : Radiohead - In Rainbows

Not much else could be written or said about this album other than what has already been said. Radiohead tops many of the best of lists across various publications and blogs. They released their album completely on their own, with their own website, and charged nothing for the music if that’s what you chose to pay. They bucked convention with this release, just as they’ve continually created new and innovative sounds on each of their albums. This, their seventh studio album and first in four years, is an amazing musical achievement even without the marketing {or lack thereof} hype.

mp3 : Radiohead - Reckoner
mp3 : Radiohead - Videotape

04 : Arcade Fire - Neon Bible (iTunes)

Although many a rabid fan and critic balked at the slightly new direction Arcade Fire went on their sophomore effort I challenge you to find another band that made this interesting, layered, and talented a second studio album. Moving away from stories involving apocalypse and funerals this album instead finds its voice in a social commentary of sorts {which is perfect when you’re influenced by Bruce Springsteen}. I thought this album was a perfect follow up to Funeral. Yes, it is different, but so are we.

mp3 : Arcade Fire - (Antichrist Television Blues)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Intervention

05 : Bishop Allen - The Broken String (iTunes)

Throughout 2006 Bishop Allen, which is a collaborative effort between Justin Rice, Christian Rudder, and various backing musicians, released twelve EP’s; one for each month. It was with much anticipation, then, that I awaited their first proper studio full length this past July. And Bishop Allen did not disappoint with The Broken String. From start to end the storytelling, the music, the melodies, and the undeniable fun of the album had me playing it for anyone who would listen. Over five months later it still amazes me that this amount of quality music was put on one album.

mp3 : Bishop Allen - The Monitor
mp3 : Bishop Allen - The Chinatown Bus

06 : Foo Figthers - Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (iTunes)

Foo Fighters released their most mature and grounded album to date while finding a way to showcase Dave Grohl’s massive talent without the use of a sprawling double album. From start to finish this album shows the diversity of the entire Foo Fighter’s cannon while always keeping you on the edge of your seat, anticipating what song is coming next. From a pure rock anthem like Come Alive, to the bombast of The Pretender, down to the the ecstasy found on The Ballad of Beaconsfield Miners, there is no stone left unturned on this, the best rock album of the year.

mp3 : Foo Figthers - The Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners
mp3 : Foo Fighters - Come Alive

07 : Sigur Ros - Hvarf/Heim (iTunes)

Sigur Ros is easily my favorite band that I cannot seem to describe to others. Or for that matter get other people to listen to. They’re a band out of the great land of Iceland and lead singer Jonsi sings in one of the most beautiful falsetto voices I’ve ever heard. If the angels from on high sang in Icelandic then this is what the music backing them would sound like. This release was a double album with the disc labelled Hvarf containing studio versions of previously unreleased tracks and the disc called Heim containing acoustic versions of previous favorites.

mp3 : Sigur Ros - Heysatan
mp3 : Sigur Ros - Staralfur

08 : Beirut - The Flying Club Cup (iTunes)

Originally scoring much higher in my list Beirut fell to number eight after repeated listenings. Although this album didn’t have the staying power I thought it would have it still is a solid effort from Zach Condon throughout the mix as he brings his particular ecclectic/gypsy/folk/balkan style of music and makes it a true edition to the great new American Folk wave. There’s something in his music that cannot be found anywhere else. Due most likely to his extensive traveling throughout eastern Europe during his developmental years and the fact that a wrist injury keeps him from playing the guitar properly.

mp3 : Beirut - Guyamas Sonora

09 : Band of Horses - Cease to Begin (iTunes)

The critics who hated and/or panned this album when it was released have almost nothing in common with me. I, for one, cannot fathom what they were looking for in the second studio album from Band of Horses. Cease to Begin showcases a sound and style that are uniquely theirs; from the driving guitar rhythms to the unique crooning style of frontman Ben Bridwell. I thought this album was solid from start to finish with the inclusion of a few incredible tracks like Island on the Coast and Is There A Ghost. Band of Horses is one of the best bands in the past couple of years and I’ve been excited about their music since their first release.

mp3 : Band of Horses - Island on the Coast

10 : Sea Wolf - Leaves in the River (iTunes)

Rounding out the top ten albums of 2007 is this little gem by Sea Wolf. This band is the brainchild of Alex Brown Church, who formerly played with the band Irving, and he incorporates a variety of devices and sounds to tell his stories. Although at times the record can sound like a smooth amalgamation of various sources, in the end it is a blissful thirty five minute mosey through Alex’s life, music, and stories.

mp3 : Sea Wolf - Leaves In The River

Download all the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

And there you have it. In my humble opinion those were the best albums of 2007. Other noteworthy albums that didn’t quite make the top ten include In Our Bedroom After The War by Stars, Wednesdays by Wakey!Wakey!, From Here We Go Sublime by The Field, Sawdust by The Killers, Magic by Bruce Springsteen, B Sides Live by Zach Williams, Graduation by Kanye West, and We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank by Modest Mouse. As talented and wonderful as this past year has been I’m looking forward to 2008 when there will be new albums by my favorites Sufjan Stevens, Cloud Cult, the Magnetic Fields, the Postal Service, and Weezer.

For those of you who just found my blog take a minute a peruse other posts here at The World Forgot. I hope you enjoyed yourself this year, 2008 is sure to bring something amazing to everyone.

Gossip Girl vol 09

I’m sorry for the long delay in this series. I was a bit caught up in the holidays, the end of the year, all of the lists I feel obligated to make, etc. But this series is back and better than ever. It seems as if the more I poke fun at the music used on Gossip Girl the better the selections have become on future episodes. So I hesitate to say anything good, at all, about the soundtrack until they incorporate some little known acts from New York into the lineup. I’m pushing for Zach Williams or Wakey!Wakey! Think about it. Wouldn’t it be great if the little Manhattanites went to a cool indie show at Rockwood or Southpaw? I think that would make an excellent date for Dan and Serena or Jenny and Nate {oh, I said it!}.

These songs appeared in the episode where it was revealed that Blair struggles from bulimia and has received counseling for this before. I’m sure Tom Cruise would’ve hated this episode, but who cares.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {link removed by request}

mp3 : Nelly Furtado - Promiscuous (feat Timbaland)
mp3 : Ok Go - Here It Goes Again
mp3 : Bonobo - Recurring
mp3 : Sebastian Tellier - La Ritournelle {link removed by request}
- buy it on iTunes and help out the indie label that promotes Mr. Tellier
- or get it direct from the label, Lucky Number Music
mp3 : Vanessa Carlton - Nolita Fairytale
mp3 : Will Dailey - Grand Opening

Enjoy the songs my friends. The ambient/insturmental track by Bonobo sounds achingly familiar but I cannot seem to place where I’ve heard this sound before. I’m thinking maybe, wait, I got it. It sounds just like Imogen Heap without vocals. Trust me, that’s what it is. The OK Go track is awesome, but who hasn’t heard it a thousand times by now? Also, the Sebastian Tellier track could easily have passed for an instrumental remix of a melodic Radiohead song. They clearly sound similar. The Nelly Furtado track is only popping because of Timbaland and the Vanessa Carlton track could be avoided. And in the end the Will Dailey track is solid but largely forgettable.

BOTR vol 01

Welcome welcome welcome to a new series I hope to be posting at the end of each month. Some of you are already aware that I have a Best of the Month (BOTM) series that I maintain here on The World Forgot, but this is something new. I present to you Best of the Remix, or BOTR for short. I’ve noticed a wonderful trend lately that has made the remix of a popular song almost as ubiquitous as the original recording. It seems as if anyone with a laptop and a few spare hours manages to remix, reblip, or rework a song into something new. Now, granted, not all of these remixes are any good, but how are you to know the good from the bad? That’s where I come in. Presented here for your listening pleasure are the best remixes I heard during the previous month. Enjoy these tracks and come back next month for vol 02.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

mp3 : Andy Williams - It’s The Most Wonderful Time of The Year (A Shrift Remix)
mp3 : Bloc Party - Flux (GoodBooks Magnetism Mix)
mp3 : Britney Spears - Piece of Me (Bimbo Jones Club Mix)
mp3 : Daft Punk - Da Funk (Armand Van Helden’s Ten Minutes of Funk Mix)
mp3 : Daft Punk - Human After All (Peterdragontail Remix)
mp3 : The Go! Team - Grip Like a Vice (Mojib Remix)
mp3 : Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl (Think Quick 8bit Remix)
mp3 : Justice - D.A.N.C.E. (CFCF Remix)
mp3 : Kings of Convenience - I Don’t Know (Mojib Remix)
mp3 : Radiohead - Videotape (Ring Trick Mix)
mp3 : Sigur Ros - Staralfur (Mojib Break of Dawn Remix)
mp3 : The Bee Gees - Stayin Alive (Teddybears Remix)
mp3 : Thom Yorke - Analyse (Various Remix)
mp3 : Thom Yorke - The Clock (Surgeon Remix)
mp3 : TV On The Radio - Staring At The Sun (Bryan Hyde Remix)

Notable standouts in this crowded first class are the Justice, TV On The Radio, Gwen Stefani, and Bloc Party remixed tracks. The rest are solid as well and I hope you enjoy them all. And for fans of my Gossip Girl series fear not, vol 09 will be posted later today or early tomorrow. After all I do have three volumes to go to catch up. Also, later this week I’ll be posting my best albums of the year. You might be a little surprised at my choices {as in you might have never listened to my number one and two slots}.

BOTM vol 03

Another month has come and gone, almost, and it is once again time for a little Best of the Month roundup. As I’ve said, and explained, before I have a lot more free time than you do. I don’t do much with my life other than listen to music and mess around with friends so, consequently, I have a lot of time to scour the interwebs to find the best music you probably missed on the first go round. These tracks were found using a variety of sources including Hype, Elbows, random blogs, and other music sites. Enjoy the tracks, I hope you all had a magnificent Christmas.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

mp3 : Jens Lekman - I’m Leaving You Because I Don’t Love You
mp3 : Lightspeed Champion - Heart in a Cage (Live The Strokes Cover)
mp3 : Lupe Fiasco - Streets on Fire
mp3 : Macon Grayson - Minnesota Weatherman
mp3 : Mylo - Sweet Child of Mine (Live Guns N Roses Cover)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Far Physician’s Son
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - How Can The Stone Remain
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - In the Words of the Governor
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - The Transfigurartion (Live Orchestral Version)
mp3 : The Clark Brothers - Gimme Shelter (Live Rolling Stones Cover)
mp3 : The Killers - Great Big Sled (Live)
mp3 : The Magnetic Fields - California Girls

Definitely check out the tracks by Lightspeed Champion, the newcomers The Clark Brothers, Mylo, and the new song from the upcoming Magnetic Fields album. The rest of the tracks are pretty awesome as well, especially the very rare Sufjan songs that were graciously given to my by many a concerned reader during my Seven Days of Sufjan Stevens. {if you look closely you’ll notice none of these songs are a remixed track. stay tuned for my inaugural post in the new BOTR series later this week}. Also, does anyone else think that Lupe Fiasco is very similar to Moby mixed with Will Smith? Whatever your opinion this track by Lupe Fiasco is phenomenal. Also, if Macon Greyson isn’t winning the award for ‘band who sounds the most like Lynryd Skynryd’ I don’t know who is.

Scott Boehner

Labelling yourself a new wave artist basically means I have no idea what you’re attempting to sound like. In the case of Scott Boehner, also known as Maple Plain or Scotty and the Help, new wave music sounds very glitchy and beep laden while maintaining a strong melodic narrative. Think the Killers meets Dntel meets Joy Electric meets a Commodore 64. If that’s not confusing you enough then I need to try harder in my future reviews of new wave musicians.

All that aside Scott Boehner writes vignettes about being kidnapped for love, what Robinson Crusoe would do if he was on Mars, pleading with Jesus to save us as Santa is dead, or other such slightly off kilter storylines. Although it would appear on the surface that he doesn’t take his music very seriously I would say it is anything but silly computer blips a kid looped together with Acid Pro. Granted, Scotty and the Help isn’t a sound for everyone in the world, but there is a maturity of composition and melody mixed in with his sense of humour. Three of the tracks below appear on Scott’s 2006 release Creature or Companion (iTunes).

mp3 : Scotty and the Help - Santa Claus is Dead
mp3 : Scotty and the Help - Kidnapped For Love
mp3 : Scotty and the Help - Mr. Atomic
mp3 : Scotty and the Help - Robinson Crusoe on Mars

Recently a friend of mine who maintains a video blog {not the traditional ’save britney’ or ‘this is my life every day… it’s dull’ type of vlogging. more of a video archive} took the trailer for I Am Legend and put Scott’s song Last Man on Earth {written and recorded in 2006} to it. It’s gotten a bit of attention over on YouTube. You should check it out here. It’s strange how perfectly the song fits the premise of the movie.

For those of you who still aren’t sold on Scott Boehner you can check out his side project, Maple Plain, which he describes as “a very Eels/Pedro/Okkervil River-inspired thingy.” I’d say that description pretty much hits the nail on the head. With this outfit Scott creates a slightly melancholic brand of folk music filled with simple, but somehow tragic, layers of sentiment and longing.

mp3 : Maple Plain - On The Inside
mp3 : Maple Plain - What I Came Here For

Personally I feel as if What I Came Here For is the best track of the bunch I put up here. At times I could see this track even reflecting the modern day resurgence of gypsy, carnival, eccentricism found in acts like Beirut.

John Neilson

I was sitting here on a rainy Saturday afternoon, thinking about life and all that comes with it, and I realized that it doesn’t really feel like Christmas.  What happened?  Maybe it’s because I was out of the States for two holiday seasons in a row and I don’t know what Christmas feels like anymore.  Maybe it’s because climate change has taken virtually all of the cold nights and blustery snows and turned them into random spring like rainstorms.  I can’t really put my finger on it.

But all of this is beside the point.  In this boring raining afternoon I decided to do a little cleaning out of my email inbox.  And I stumbled upon this little gem by John Neilson.  He’s a musician of the singer songwriter sort and this piano song felt perfect when matched up with dreary weather and the early darkness so prevalent during the winter season.

Chris Garneau

Chris garnered a bunch of press about eleven months ago when his debut full length, Music for Tourists (iTunes), dropped.  It even led some people to predict Chris’ rise into many of the ubiquitous best albums of 2007 lists on every blog and website.  While I have yet to see Chris appear on a single top album list it doesn’t detract from the quality of his music.  If anything I would attribute his Houdini act to timing as opposed to talent.  I mean honestly, who remembers albums from almost a full year ago?

Recently he has been touring to help promote his new EP called C Sides (iTunes).  I’m not entirely sure if this is just a cheeky play on the phrase b-sides or if it actually references the ocean theme apparent in The Island Song.  Or maybe his mates all call him C, so he thought that titling his EP C Sides would really be self titling this little five song ditty.  What I do know is that the track below, It’s Almost Christmas, hails from this new EP and is both elegant and perfectly timed for the holiday season.  The other two tracks can be found on the aforementioned Music for Tourists.

mp3 : Chris Garneau - It’s Almost Christmas
mp3 : Chris Garneau - Black & Blue
mp3 : Chris Garneau - Relief

While much attention has been drawn to the similarities bewteen Chris Garneau and Rufus Wainwright the real similiarty I hear when I listen to Chris has my brain alinging him in the camp of Regina Spektor.  Have a listen and be your own judge.  Chris makes solid music.

+ twf hype elbows site myspace amazon itunes

Harry Connick Jr

What would the holiday season be without the modern day counterpart to Bing, Andy, and Frank?  I label Harry Connick, Jr. as a contemporary counterpart to those classic three because he tends to create in a timeless style.  He’s not as present-day-centric as Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, or Sufjan.  He plays jazz with some swing {and swagger} and he doesn’t care who knows it.  Personally I find some of his songs a bit too much, and I prefer Harry’s acting career to his music, but it still wouldn’t be a true holiday season without some of Harry for the Holidays (iTunes).

mp3 : Harry Connick Jr - Frosty The Snowman
mp3 : Harry Connick Jr - Jingle Bells
mp3 : Harry Connick Jr - The Christmas Waltz

I chose these three tracks because they showcase the breadth of Harry’s trademark swing.  This will be one of the last remaining Christmas posts I do as I’m working on BOTM vol 3, BOTR vol 1, and my year ending list of best albums {you’ll probably be surprised what my top ten are} for next week.

Arcade Fire

In 2002, yes long before their debut was released, Arcade Fire sat down with some friends and guest musicians and sang some ditties.  An important addendum to this recording is that front man Win has claimed he doesn’t sing on any of the tracks.  The rumour is that the vocals are from a variety of sources all attempting to imitate Win Butler’s characteristic wobble.  Regardless of the actual history the tracks are a gem for any true fan of Arcade Fire.

mp3 : Arcade Fire - A Very Arcade Xmas
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Chestnuts Roasting
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Oh Holy Night

I’m not sure if anyone really wants this version of Chestnuts Roasting as it honestly sounds as if there was a bit to much of the good stuff passed around Win’s apartment that night.  All three tracks I’ve posted here sound a bit like a joke or parody of Christmas music and I take it that was the sound these cheeky Canadians were aiming for.  Easily the one you need to hear is A Very Arcade Xmas.

Bright Eyes

In 2002 Conor Oberst got together with a load of friends and recored an album simply entitled A Christmas Album.  The album is only available for purchase from Saddle Creek and all profits of the album sale go to benefit the Nebraska AIDS Project.  If you would like to buy the album you can go here to order a copy or you can go straight to the Nebraska AIDS Project website for more information on their organization.   Below are three tracks from this album which is a nice modern Bright Eyes style take on a lot of traditional Christmas fare.

mp3 : Bright Eyes - God Rest Ye Merry Gentelmen
mp3 : Bright Eyes - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
mp3 : Bright Eyes - The Night Before Christmas

The last track, The Night Before Christmas, is a dramatic reading of the classic Christmas poem set to a plinking piano track.  It’s a wonderful way to hear The Night Before Christmas.  Guests on the album include Jake Bellows, Gretta Cohn, Armand Costanzo, Denver Dalley, Stephanie Drootin, Orenda Fink, Neely Jenkins, Jiha Lee, Andy Lemaster, Mike Mogis, Matt Oberst, Stephen Pedersen, Blake Sennett, Macey Taylor, and Nick White.

Seriously West Coast vol 02

Back in September the Vancouver Sun released their first compilation album with the help of a decidedly Canadian cast of musicians.  The songs on that compilation were a solid gathering of sounds and with a little digging they can still be found on the interwebs.  This time around the Vancouver Sun released yet another completely free digital download filled with amazing artists.  And, this time, there is a holiday theme that runs through all the music.

Enjoy the tracks below.  For a limited time you can download the entire compilation in high quality mp3 format direct from the Vancouver Sun here.  The tracks below comprise the entire album and I’m making them available as not everyone in the world has broadband or the desire to hear each and every track that ever found a website.  Cheers.

Cloud Cult Live at Legends

This past Saturday I had the unbelieveable priviledge to see Cloud Cult play their very first show in Indiana.  Not only that, but the show was free at The Legends of Notre Dame.  To say that the show was anything less than phenomenal would be a lie.  Cloud Cult stands as one of the most underrated bands of the last decade.  Their live set is something to behold and left me simply feeling that “this band is unbelievable.”

The show they played at Legends was a lengthy set spiraling through their most recent release, The Meaning of 8 (iTunes), while they included some older tracks and a new song from their upcoming album to be released in mid 2008.  The band itself is comprised of seven people, two of whom are artists who paint gorgeous murals throughout the entire set.  At the end of the show the artwork is auction off so that the band can “buy enough gas to get home” in their environmentally friendly bio-diesel bus.  In addition to saving the world with their bus they also sell all of their own merchandise through front man Craig Minowa’s label, Earthology Records, which uses only recycled materials and puts all of their profits toward environmental charities.  {Al Gore, this band + you = superheroes}

The energy on stage throughout their set from their opener, Hope, to the show stopping encore of Chain Reaction {with literally half of the fans singing along to ’suck up, suck up, and take your medicine’} was infectious.  I left the show after shaking hands with the band behind their merch table, and scoring a great t-shirt, knowing that if at all possible I will see Cloud Cult play again.

mp3 : Cloud Cult - Hope
mp3 : Cloud Cult - Chain Reaction
mp3 : Cloud Cult - Take Your Medicine

If ever there was an American counter to the brilliance of Canada’s Arcade Fire, this is that band.  In case you’re wondering their new track, which I have no idea what it is called, was intensely beautiful.  Their upcoming album sounds promising and will easily be on of my most anticipated albums of 2008.

February: Norway
March 10: Kansas City - Davey’s Uptown Rambler
March 11: Oklahoma City
March 12: Dallas, TX - Granada Theater

Wakey!Wakey!

Not enough good things can be said about Wakey!Wakey!  This recent series of covers have been mind boggling amazing.  The more I listen to these reworkings, of mostly well known songs, the more Wakey!Wakey! begins to steal the song for his own.  His voice on these recordings reminds me a lot of Ben Gibbard.  Now hear me out before you dismiss this upon first listen.  I draw the parallel in that they both seem to have an amazing purity to their style of singing.  Granted, I wouldn’t say Mike Grubbs and Ben Gibbard are imitations of each other, but there is a certain earnestness in both their voices that makes me just want to be a part of their songs.

Here’s the latest two songs Wakey!Wakey! has ereleased in preparation for his new album {which just dropped this week and is available on his myspace}.  Enjoy these tunes, the cover of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy is astounding.

Seven Days of Sufjan Stevens part 7

It has been a wonderful week. This week I’ve met some new friends, reaquainted with old ones, and discovered I haven’t yet heard every single song recorded by Sufjan Stevens. For those of you just dropping by this is the final installment of my current series, Seven Days of Sufjan Stevens. If you’d like to view this entire series on one page you can simply click here and it will be displayed for your viewing pleasure. Also, today is the last day that you can vote for The World Forgot. If you’d like to show some support please leave a comment on this post or simply vote for this blog. On to the music.

This post has literally taken me all day to compile. I’ve been working steadily on the music below for the past seven hours. Yes, seven hours. Granted some of that was uploading time, but most of it was spent editing a large concert file down to individual tracks, finding the best or cleanest version of a song, or simply finding a song to fulfill a request. You’re lucky I didn’t have to work today or this post never would have been realized.

This first section of songs is taken from a 2004 performance that Sufjan played up in Canada. The venue was a place called Lees Palace and it can be found in Toronto. The sound quality of the recording is absolutely excellent. To the best of my knowledge this concert has never been available as individual song downloads, so enjoy this little gem. For those of you who would like the entire concert, simply download the zip file from zshare {link}. This download contains every single second of the recording split up into individual tracks. With the entire concert you get to hear Sufjan banter a bit and explain literally every single song that he plays. The individual tracks listed below are listed in the order they were played that night and they have been edited, as best as possible, so that they contain only the song and not the conversational pieces or the audience applause. Choose your poison.

All the tracks in one zip file : here {zshare = left click}

mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - The Fifty States (Live at Lees Palace)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Flint (For The Unemployed and Underpaid) (Live at Lees Palace)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Chicago (Live at Lees Palace)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Sister (Live at Lees Palace)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - The Upper Peninsula (Live at Lees Palace)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - A Good Man Is Hard To Find (Live at Lees Palace)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - That Dress Looks Nice On You (Live at Lees Palace)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Say Yes! To M!ch!gan! (Live at Lees Palace)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Romulus (Live at Lees Palace)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - He Woke Me Up Again (Live at Lees Palace)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans (Live at Lees Palace)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - The Star Spangled Banner (Live at Lees Palace)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - All Good Naysayers, Speak Up! Or Forever Hold Your Peace! (Live at Lees Palace)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Super Sexy Woman (Live at Lees Palace)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - For the Widows In Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti (Live at Lees Palace)

It is quite an amazing set and I’m glad to be able to post it here. Enjoy it thoroughly, I recommend downloading the entire concert in one zip file as it gives you a much more complete set.

This next live set hails from a Festival Sufjan played October 1st, 2004 called the Festival Para Gente Sentada. Again you have two options to download the tracks. If you would like you can grab all the files in one easy to use zip file. The other option comes as single song downloads for those of you readers who are a bit more frugal with hard drive space. As per usual the tracks below are listed in the order they were played that night.

Yet another great set from the esteemed Sufjan Stevens. It seems as if he cannot go wrong. As I’ve said before Sufjan seems to have a certain musical Midas touch with which, and we are all thankful, he has seen appropriate to share this blessing with us all.

This last section of songs hail from all over the map of the Sufjan canon. This is where I’m answering requests that were left during the previous six days. There’s a couple of Christmas tracks, a few from studio albums, and a trifecta of rare and largely unpublished other tracks. The BQE tracks hail from an in studio radio performance Sufjan and his orchestra played at WNYC. For those of you who don’t know The BQE stands for The Brooklyn Queens Expressway and it was a musical composition Sufjan set to a short film he made of that highway. Enjoy the rarities, some of them were an utter pain to find.

mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Bushwick Junkie
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - God’ll Ne’er Let You Down
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Holy, Holy, Holy
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Sister Winter
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - The BQE Movement 3 (Live on WNYC)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - The BQE Movement 6 (Live on WNYC)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Come On! Feel The Illinoise!: Part I: The World’s Columbian Exposition/Part II: Carl Sandburg Visits Me In A Dream
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Variation On Commemorative Transfiguration & Communion At Magruder Park

At long last this brings us to the end of the 2007 installment of Seven Days of Sufjan.  I hope you’ve enjoyed your time here at The World Forgot and I hope I’ll see you back in the future.  I’m not sure how long these tracks will stay available here as they seem to be downloaded literally by the dozens and it kills my bandwidth allowance. I hope you’ve enjoyed this trip through all things Sufjan and make sure you see him live to really experience his genius. Support him as an artist and support other bands on his label, Asthmatic Kitty. Cheers.

Seven Days of Sufjan Stevens part 6

Welcome to the sixth installment of Seven Days of Sufjan Stevens. This is a series that I began, largely in jest, last year when my blog was still a young pup just learning to run around. This time around I’m dumping massive amounts of tracks from the ubiquitous Sufjan and I’m also encouraging you, if you like what you’re getting, to vote for this blog in the Billboard Best Music Blog competition. You only have two days left to vote, so hurry up and vote for this blog.

These tracks hail largely from various sources. Some are from the B-Sides of Michigan. Some performances have only ever been heard live. Others hail from compilation albums or an EP. Wherever they come from they are mostly rare. To the die hard Sufjan fan these might be old news. You might even have them floating around on your drive somewhere. For the rest of the world here’s a chance to see Sufjan in a new light.

If you’ve never heard Niagara Falls, Opie’s Funeral Song, or The Lord God Bird those are the three tracks that you should listen to immediately. Don’t hesitate, just listen. The rest of the tracks are quality as well. I hope you’re enjoying Seven Days of Sufjan Stevens. If you’d like to see the entire series on one page simply click here. Tomorrow I was planning on dropping two full live sets {at least one of which is recorded from the soundboard} and Movements 3 and 6 from the BQE. Does that sound like something you would be interested in?

Seven Days of Sufjan Stevens part 5

The Seven Days of Sufjan Stevens in 2007 is winding down my friends but it has been a good ride thus far. I hope you’ve all enjoyed the tracks posted and if you missed any feel free to click here and view the entire series of posts on one page.

Today I take a look at various covers that Sufjan has preformed, both in studio recordings and live. Although this isn’t a complete list of efforts these tracks serve to show his versatility as a musician as he covers some songs straight up and other songs he puts his own Sufjan spin on. Covers in this series can be found a variety of compilation albums; most notably Dream Brother, A Tribute to Joni Mitchell (iTunes), This Bird has Flown, and the soundtrack to the film I’m Not There (iTunes).

mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Free Man In Paris (Joni Mitchell Cover)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Lakes of Canada (Live The Innocence Mission Cover)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Ring Them Bells (Bob Dylan Cover)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - She Is (Tim Buckley Cover)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - The One I Love (Live REM Cover)
mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - What Goes On (Beatles Cover)

The song Lakes of Canada is especially wonderful and if there comes a request or two I could possibly post the original by The Innocence Band sometime soon. We’ll see if anyone wants it. Cheers.

Damien Rice

Damien Rice is an amazing artist with great talent.  His voice and his style stand in a class of their own.  Another great thing about Damien is that he’s worked closely with Lisa Hannigan on a lot of his tracks.  Putting these two artists in the same room is like putting early Simon and Garfunkel together.

I’m not sure if these tracks, like yesterday’s post about Simon and Garfunkel, actually qualify as Christmas music but seeing as how this is my blog, and I don’t really care, I can post whatever I feel like.  So here’s some tracks from Mr. Rice.  Enjoy the tunes.

mp3 : Damien Rice - Happy Christmas (War Is Over) (Live on KCRW)
mp3 : Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan - Silent Night

This reworking of Silent Night is particularly amazing.  Definitely give it a listen if you haven’t already.
