Gossip Girl vol 01

I talked this show up a bit last week after catching the series premiere. And all ridiculous high school drama aside these cats do play some good music. Or rather good music is played over their heads as they look forlornly off camera with that unfocused gaze that says more than a nine hour narration ever could. Here’s all the music that appears in last weeks episode. Hopefully in the second episode, which shows tonight on The CW, will include more pop and less hip hop. Or at least less bad hip hop. Or at least less Akon and Rihanna.

mp3 : Air - Photograph
mp3 : Akon - Don’t Matter
mp3 : Albert Hammond Jr. - Hard To Live In The City
mp3 : Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
mp3 : Angels & Airwaves - The Gift
mp3 : Cold War Kids - Hang Me Up To Dry
mp3 : Hanson - Go
mp3 : Justin Timberlake - What Goes Around Comes Around
mp3 : Peter Bjorn and John - Young Folks
mp3 : Rihanna - If It’s Lovin’ That You Want - Part 2 (Feat. Corey Gunz)
mp3 : Timbaland - The Way I Are (Feat. Keri Hilson and D.O.E.)
mp3 : Washington Social Diamond Club - Diamond Hipster Boy

I recommend the tracks by Air, Albert Hammond Jr., Amy Winehouse, and suprise, Hanson. The rest of the tracks are worth putting in the shows premier, but might not necessarily make the cut of your next iTunes mix.

Kanye vs 50

It was a much ballyhooed clash of the hip hop titans this summer. Kanye West vs 50 Cent. They dropped their albums on the same day, they talked more trash than Muhammad Ali, and at one point 50 even told the press that he would retire if Kanye’s album outsold his in the first week.

Well, as we know now, Kanye’s album trounced 50’s. Not entirely because it’s a much better album to begin with but I would argue Kanye is just a better star. He’s not really a thug, he doesn’t identify with gangsta activity, the general market that 50 sells to, and his rhymes are more in line with a certain panache, a certain self assuredness that comes across as slightly superior to all other rappers. Face it, when you listen to his music you’re imagining yourself as slightly superior to all those other music crazy fools. To be blunt he’s easily marketable and appeals to repeat radio listeners ears. And let’s be honest for a moment, the only people still buying hard copies of albums are the same people that still listen to standard AM/FM radio.

Take a listen for yourself and see what you think. Granted this Kanye Track is a remix of his smash hit, but it still dominates the 50 track, even when he had Timbaland and JT lending him massive help.

mp3 : Kanye West - Stronger (A-TrakRemix)
mp3 : 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake - Ayo Technology

Well it’s clear in my mind that Kanye has defeated 50. I don’t know who else Kanye still has to prove himself against. Maybe The Fugees can drop a new album and give him a run for his money?

The Darjeeling Limited

Is anyone else as excited for this new Wes Anderson movie as I am?

Arcade Fire

A long time ago I posted the fully performance that The Arcade Fire did for KCRW. It crashed the file host that I was currently using not just for me but for all their customers. Then I posted it again using a new and improved file host. They banned my account for life. A third file host took the files, watched me eat all of their bandwidth, and promptly upgraded servers conveniently losing my files and all the links along with them.

Let us hope and pray that this time is different. What you’ll find below is the entire segment that The Arcade Fire did for KCRW. A couple of the tracks are intros and interviews and as such aren’t musical tracks. Although they’re all worth downloading. Enjoy the music and welcome back to The World Forgot.

mp3 : Arcade Fire - Intro (Live on KCRW)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Wake Up (Live on KCRW)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Neighborhood 4 (Live on KCRW)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Vampire Forest Fire (Live on KCRW)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Interview (Live on KCRW)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Intervention (Live on KCRW)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Born on a Train (Live on KCRW)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - In the Backseat (Live on KCRW)
mp3 : Arcade Fire - Outro (Live on KCRW)

Why is it that most of the musical talent seems to have come, as of late, from outside of the States? Or has it always been this way?

Like, OMG, Gossip Girl

Ok, this might not be fair, but I do think that this is the best thing Josh Schwartz has done since season two of The OC ended. Let’s face it, the last seasonish of The OC totally sucked. So tonight, on The CW, his next series premiered. Rumour has it that at first Gossip Girl was targeted as a feature film starring Lindsey Lohan, but after that all blew over [or rehabbed over, respect], the idea was given to Josh Scwartz to develop as a television series.

For those of you who missed it here’s the basic formula of the pilot. A bunch of good looking actors and actresses try desperately to convince you they’re in high school while looking approximately twenty three. They don’t succeed at this attempt, at all, but they do suck you into another never ending storyline filled with mysterious histories, more high school drama than all the current high schoolers in Manhattan put together, and quite a bit of innuendo and outright sex. So basically think it’s The OC, set in New York, with a certain clairvoyant Gossip Girl web personality narrating it all [watch out Morgan Freeman, this kid has got talent]. As hard as that might be to stomach [almost as hard as realizing that Hype has yet to figure out what’s up with my site] by the end of the pilot episode I had decided, “yeah, I’ll watch that.”

Gossip Girl
Besides, true to the early OC formula, they have a pretty killer soundtrack. It must be nice to have Alexandra Patsavas of Chop Shop Music as your musical coordinator. The only thing missing now is a segment of their official web site devoted entirely to what band and what song played in each episode. I’m sure that’ll happen soon.Anyone know what song that was played at the end? It sounded to me like a new track from Blink 182. Could it be? I know they were alleging a reunion album and tour either 2008 or 2009. But anyway, enough of that. Here’s some music to have fun with. I love their new album by the way, but I won’t spoil anything here with leaked tracks. Enjoy some older stuff they’ve done. Literally everything the Foo Fighters touch is wonderful.

Josh Ritter

I love the man, and I love the fact that he’s covered Modest Mouse even more. Does that make me a double timing lover? I don’t know, you decide.

I’m still sick, so get over it. That’s all you get.

Show Some Love

In the past whenever Hype and Elbo.ws started to fail me I took a moment to reflect on what this blog has meant to me, and maybe more importantly, what it means to other people. First of all let me guide you to the list of Friends and Lovers there on the right. I love those bloggers, I really do, and I would appreciate it greatly if you clicked over there and checked out their sites. I know that I’m risking losing you forever, but as long as one blogger benefits then it’s worth it. And seriously, they deserve some love.

I also realize that many of you won’t read this post, won’t click over on that post, and really don’t give a rats ass about anything. But just in case you are reading this post but are too lazy to click on the sidebar here’s a little catchup for you weaker minded fiends. Just click the links hereafter for some great music blogs. It’s not an all inclusive list like some bloggers have simply because I try to keep it limited to the blogs that I actually read on a regular basis. I love these blogs, I hope you will too.

An Aquarium Drunkard
Bows + Arrows
Cable and Tweed
Crown Dozen
Good Weather for Airstrikes
Gorilla vs. Bear
I Guess I’m Floating

The Late Greats
My Old Kentucky Blog
Songs:Illinois
Stereogum
You Ain’t No Picaso
Who Killed the Mixtape

And finally I am going to pay special homage to a blog that I have loved for awhile and have been secretly reading for quite some time. They’ve gone out of their way to send me love and some readers this summer and my list simply wouldn’t be complete without them. To be honest I can’t belive that I’ve left them out for so long. They are and shall ever be in my heart as This Recording. They have great music, an amazing knowledge of pop culture, and the rambling style used in their posting keeps me engaged as I try to understand what exactly links everything talked about in one post together. Basically it’s brilliant stream of consciousness writing and I love it.

Seriously West Coast vol 01

The other day I was checking around this new space I call my blog and I was clicking through all the links, making sure they were pointed at the correct sites, and so on. Well I stumbled down to where the ad banners are displayed and I did something that I honestly rarely, if ever, do. I clicked on one because it actually caught my attention. It was actually an ad for a free music mix presented over at the website for The Vancouver Sun. And of course, like a good little blogger, I snapped it up. And you can download the tracks here as individual files. I’m sick, or I would have posted this earlier today, but this strange cold snap has gone a shoved what feels like a cheese grater down my throat. Non-yum.

Read the article here, or check out The Vancouver Sun.

mp3 : Bare Naked Ladies - Wind It Up
mp3 : Fauxilage - Rafe (Gabin Remix)
mp3 : Josh Rouse - Hollywood Bass Player
mp3 : The Weepies - Gotta Have You
mp3 : Sarah McLachlan - Witness (Live)
mp3 : The Perishers - Victorious
mp3 : Datarock - Fa Fa Fa
mp3 : Uh Huh Her - Say So (Tom Russo Mix)
mp3 : Moev - Yeah Whatever
mp3 : The Format - She Doesn’t Get It
mp3 : Leigh Nash - Ocean Size Love
mp3 : Bare Naked Ladies - Home (Live)
mp3 : Great Lake Swimmers - Your Rocky Spine
mp3 : The Be Good Tanyas - Ootischenia
mp3 : The Water Walk - Turn Your Face Away

To be quite honest all of the songs are great and deserve their spot here on Seriously West Coast vol 01. If you’re only stopping by and only have but a moment to take in one song then by all means download the brilliant song by Leigh Nash. It’s heartbreaking and in all honesty outshines many of the other tracks on the compilation.

The Office

Well, to be fair, they may not be the most watched network. They might not be the most family friendly or America’s favorite. But they are my favorite. Simply put they have most of the shows that I want to watch. And Thursday nights are by far the best. With The Office, Scrubs, 30 Rock, and ER all in a stretch I could theoretically not move for hours on end as I sit and laugh and then cry for a good two hours plus. Even doubly so now that The Office is kicking off their season with four full hour episodes. Get excited.

Also, get excited for the first official post from the new and improved The World Forgot starting here on Monday morning. Rumours abound about a possible Arcade Fire post. Could it be I’m reposting some Arcade Fire tracks that were so popular in the past that I’ve been kicked off of three separate file hosts?

Ch Ch Ch Changes

Well expect some changes here on The World Forgot as I figure out how to use Wordpress and the K2 theme. I must say that already I love it over here on my own site and I’m glad to have finally made the jump from Blogger to something that I can more easily control.

Expect the site to gradually and slowly shift into what I want it to look like and feel like. You can be sure that this simple template won’t last forever. Cause really, no one wants forever anymore. In other news I picked up a new guest writer. In the good old days you’ve seen his compilations a couple of times and you might know him simply as Josh. Hopefully now Josh will be more of a regular contributor here at The World Forgot and in the process I’ll be looking to have new posts and updates on this site on a daily basis.

Really, there is enough good music to go around, so I honestly should be blogging something every day. Now I’m just waiting and twiddling my thumbs until Hype and Elbo.ws switches their bots over to this new address.

Cheers.

A Wee Bit o Change

As you can see I’m making some changes here at The World Forgot. The biggest is that we just went through the switch from blogger 1.0 to the new blogger. This, however, totally erased all the fun stuff we had. You know, like links to other blogs, links to bands, ads, etc. But have no fear, those things will all be incorporated, eventually, into our new home.

Our new home being www.theworldforgot.com. Yep, that’s right, I’m running with the big dogs now. Well, I will be running with them as soon as I get it up and running over there. Right now I’m just working on importing all these old posts and after that I’ll get to making it look snazzy and display all the uber content that you all love.

Check me out.

Franz Ferdinand

I first heard of this delicious group when, believe it of not, I saw The Thrills, Phantom Planet, and Stereogram play a little show north of Indy. For some reason they were handing out little Franz Ferdinand flyers at the door and it served to pique my interest a bit.

Now that was all years ago. Before the ‘nand hit it big both in the states and elsewhere. Before they sold out shows and jet setted around the globe, buying pints of milk and going out for a smoke every now and then. That was also years before they took a Gwen Stefani staple dance tune and made it their own. Pay special attention to the way they incorporate some brilliant Billy Idol lyrics into the end of the song. It’s glorious.

Ben Folds

If I could hang out with one musician for a day I would have to admit it would be a toss up between Ben Folds, Ben Gibbard, or John Samson from The Weakerthans. They all have such interesting musical styles and they can flat out write lyrics. For me that’s essential to liking a bit of music. It must have great lyrics. Well that is unless you’re Sigur Ros or some other ambient/sings in a different language band.

Anyway, lately I’ve been thinking about doing a week long tribute to Mr. Ben Folds, similar to the Seven Days of Sufjan series I ran last December, just to show how much I love the guy. He’s brilliant in concert, he’s quite affable in person, and he genuinely seems to like being a brilliant musician. Which, I might point out, is quite rare in the scene today.

So, instead of starting up a week long tribute to the new, and less drunk, piano man I thought I would throw this little gem up and see how much traffic Mr. Folds attracts. I’ll probably do the week tribute regardless as to whether or not it gets friends and family to see this site, but it’s always fun to know if something you love is loved, in turn, by others.

mp3 : Ben Folds - Such Great Heights (Postal Service Cover)

Ben preformed this track live at JTV in Australia. The story goes that he forgot he was supposed to play a cover tune and picked this song as it was, at the time, the most played song on his iPod. So he figured out a piano arrangement, grabbed three random percussionists from the studio, found some boxes and a glass lying around, and threw together a brilliant cover of a great song.

If you don’t believe me, just watch the video below.

Or you can watch this version of the song which he preformed live on his myspace gig webcast.

The man is quite literally a piano playing robot. And seriously, what other musician can ever claim to have invented the “guitarchestra.” [think guitar + orchestra]hype site myspace

Foo Fighters

Well, the Foo Fighters never seem to disappoint. I’ve heard it said that they are one of the most consistent rock bands currently out there and I would have to agree. Each and every album they turn out seems to be a pure and wonderful rock album. And, to be honest, we don’t get those very much anymore. Even the venerable RHCP seem to dabble a bit much in psychedelic funk to be called simply a rock band.

The Foo Fighters do have a new album coming September 25, available for preorder now, and I’m going to go ahead and say that it will be the best rock album of 2007. There, I said it, and there’s no going back now. And seriously, just check out the below video for the song The Pretender, and you’ll have to agree; Dave Grohl and company are genius.

mp3 : Foo Fighters - The Pretender
mp3 : Foo Fighters - Keep The Car Running (Arcade Fire Cover)The second track listed here is taken from the Foos recent performance on Radio 1 over yonder in Britain. They played a smashing set and are quite amazing on this cover of Arcade Fire.
