Clint Mansell and Danny Boyle’s Sunshine

EDIT/UPDATE : The below links for the mp3’s are now broken. To grab new links go to this new post.

You might be wondering how Clint Mansell and Danny Boyle’s new movie, Sunshine, are related. Well let me take a second and fill you in. Earlier today I was watching a brilliant movie, The Fountain, directed by Darren Aronofsky. I really encourage everyone reading this to see that movie. On top of the old school visual effects and wonderful storyline was laid an amazing work of music that complemented the film without competing with anything that was on the screen.

And then the end credits rolled and I was satisfied to see that Clint Mansell was behind the score. And that led my mind on a tangential thought process whereby I remembered that Clint Mansell was also behind the brilliant score for Requiem for a Dream, also directed by Darren Aronofsky. And it was at that precise moment that I thought about the trailer for Danny Boyle’s movie Sunshine.

You see, it’s not a random coincidence. The song used to promote Danny Boyle’s newest movie is in fact a remix of a song originally created by Clint Mansell for the movie Requiem for a Dream. In fact, it’s one of the most popular movie preview and advertisement sound bits ever used. To be completely honest it was first remixed and created to accompany the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers previews.

Well, there it is. Three degrees that link Clint Mansell and Danny Boyle together. And now that you too possess all this trivial information it’s time to give you some music.

mp3 : Clint Mansell - Lux Aeterna (original version)
mp3 : Clint Mansell - Lux Aeterna (Lord of the Rings Remix) (trailer version)
mp3 : Clint Mansell - Lux Aeterna (Full Orchestral Remix) (another great remix)

The Fountain is a masterpiece, and the soundtrack (also by Clint Mansell - and featuring Mogwai) is astounding. The Fountain has had very mixed reviews since it was released - people either love it or hate it - but I think that in years to come it will be a lost classic, and consequently be re-assessed by many.

You’re a legend for this post. I bought the Requiem soundtrack just for that piece of music but then when I heard the LOTR version I loved it even more (the violins are less screechy imho) Thanks very much.

OMG, I was lookin for this song since Lord of the Rings…I heard it again in the X-Men 3 trailer and again in the Sunshine trailer and again when some guy used it to create a YouTube video for a Justice League tribute. But I could never find the right title or composer. You are the best, now I can listen to it at my leisure

Any chance the mp3’s could be reposted, as it seems the file host they are on have lost the files. I’ve been searching now for 2 days online/offline for ways to buy or get a disk with the full orchestral remix and I cannot find it anywhere.

Your post is great, BUT! I can’t download any of the three files. They’ve moved server, obviously, and now the downloads don’t function. Can you do something about this?
